Donald Berg

Donald J. Berg, 78, of Arkansas Pass, TX, formerly of Waukon, died surrounded by his family Monday, December 15, 2014 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Funeral services were held Monday, December 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Jim Dubert and Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Donald John Berg was born April 30, 1936 on his parents’ farm in Luana, the son of John and Thelma (Decker) Berg. He was baptized and confirmed at Forest Mills Methodist Church in rural Postville. Don attended rural elementary school at the Red School near Forest Mills and also attended Waukon High School in Waukon. From 1954-56, Don served as a corporal in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. After being discharged, he returned to the family farm near Forest Mills and farmed for four years.  July 6, 1956 he married Doriene Elaine Geno at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Don then attended Davenport Barber College and barbered in Davenport for ten years and in Monona for three years. He also worked at Norplex in Postville and founded Lifetime Gutter and Home Improvement Company. In 1984, Don sold the company and moved to Texas; he barbered there until retiring in 2004 in Aransas Pass, TX.
He was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Arkansas Pass and was a member of the American Legion. Don enjoyed traveling and woodworking. He also spent time managing the seven rental homes he owned in Texas.
Don is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Berg of Plymouth, MA, Kyle Berg of Victoria, TX, Steven (Mary) Berg of Chatfield, MN, Scott (Nancy) Berg of Lansing, and Eric (Margo) Berg of Dickinson, TX; his daughters, Jolene (Steve) Reeg of Monona, and Kathryn Tauber of Ingleside, TX; ten grandchildren, Teresa Reeg, Shelly Pendleton, Megan Berg, Timothy Berg, Ryan Berg, Derek Tauber, Shawn Berg, Kayla Berg, Samantha Berg, and Ashley Freiburger; sister Gayle Larkin of Waukon; and special friend Harlene Wilson.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Doriene; his parents; two brothers, Rodney and Dr. Marlin Berg; two sisters, Norma Johnson and Lorraine Hefel; and daughter-in-law Peggy (Winkie) Berg.
Casketbearers were Tim, Ryan, and Shawn Berg, Jay Pendleton, Pat Freiburger, and Virgil Johnson.
