The Waukon baseball team won one of four games this past week but nearly claimed the team title at its own annual home tournament. The Indians opened the week with a 13-2 loss in five innings at Class 3A third-rated Waverly-Shell Rock Monday, June 22 before dropping a 10-0 decision at home against Charles City Friday, June 26 to remain in search of their first Northeast Iowa Conference win of the season. The baseball Tribe then hosted its annual Jeff Houg Memorial Tournament Saturday, June 27, finishing in second place after defeating Kee, 7-6, on the final play in the opening round and then falling victim to a late rally by Class 2A seventh-rated South Winneshiek, 5-3, in the tournament championship game.
Falling to an 8-11 overall record on the season, 0-10 in the Northeast Iowa Conference, the Indians were scheduled to make up a June 16 postponement at Oelwein Monday, June 29 before hosting Decorah in a doubleheader Tuesday, June 30, playing at North Fayette Valley Wednesday, July 1 in a game rescheduled from way back on May 26 and then hosting Oelwein in a doubleheader Friday, July 3. The Tribe will then wrap up its regular season with a pair of Northeast Iowa Conference road doubleheaders, at New Hampton Tuesday, July 7 and at Crestwood Friday, July 10, before beginning postseason tournament play Friday, July 17 at a site and against an opponent yet to be determined.
