Neil Meyer
Neil Elmer Meyer, 84, of Monona died Thursday, July 16, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. Funeral Services were held Monday, July 20 at Living Faith United Methodist Parish in Monona, with Rev. Dennis Hopes as the Officiant. Burial will follow at the Monona Cemetery, Monona.
Neil was born May 29, 1931 in Postville to Eldo and Beatrice (Backhaus) Meyer. He graduated from Elkader High School in 1949.
March 14, 1953, Neil was united in marriage to Virginia Eilers in Dubuque at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, with Reverend Swarbrick officiating. To this union five children were born. He was a devoted husband and father.
As a lifelong crop and livestock farmer, Neil worked diligently on the family farm located east of Monona. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing bridge with friends and neighbors, watching his children and grandchildren with all of their 4-H and sporting activities, and traveling in the camper with his beloved wife, Gini.
Neil was a faithful servant to his community. He was a 4-H leader and served on many boards: the Three Rivers Farm Service Board, the Giard Township Trustees, the Luana Savings Bank Board of Directors, the Monona City Council, and 12 years as a Clayton County Supervisor. Through his service he gained the respect of many.
Neil and Gini were longtime faithful members of The Living Faith United Methodist Church. He was a loving, devoted, faithful and humble servant. He will be so greatly missed.
Neil is survived by his five children: Jill (Jim) Fuhrman of Volga, Brian Meyer (special friend Debra Brainard) of Monona, Lynn (Paul) Jones of Harpers Ferry, Larry Meyer (fiancée Anne) of Manchester and Amy (Kert) Johnson of Coralville; 14 grandchildren: B.J. Fuhrman (Jolie) of Johnston, Leah Zwanziger (Alec) of Strawberry Point, Nicholas (Elsie) Meyer of Monona, Shannon (Wyatt) Dodd of McGregor, Phillip (Amanda) Meyer of Monona, Jared (Carrie) Jones of Charles City, Amanda (Stuart) Bloxham of Waukon, Hannah Jones of Fremont, NE, Stuart Jones of Waukon, Lexi Meyer of Minneapolis, MN, Brett Meyer (friend Sheena) of Rochester, MN, Heidi Meyer of Elgin, and Isaiah and Elena Johnson of Coralville; 19 great-grandchildren: Drew and Lauren Tegels, Aidan, Charlotte and Olive Meyer, Willem, Sullivan, Jefferson and Maetta Dodd, Jack and Jessa Meyer, Emily, Jacob, Sean and Audrey Jones, Claire and Grant Bloxham, and Peyton and Layla Meyer; his sister, Shirley (Retired General Charles I.) McGinnis of Williamsburg, VA; his sister-in-law, Muriel Meyer of Arlington, VA; his half-sister, Rena Malek of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.
Neil was preceded in death by his wife, Gini; his daughter-in-law, Debbie Meyer; his brothers, Lowell Meyer and Bruce (Jane) Meyer; and his parents, Eldo and Beatrice Meyer.
