Waukon football team opens District play with 14-3 home win over Beckman

Waukon football senior quarterback Peyton Hesse launches a pass attempt in the Indians’ 14-3 home victory over Dyersville Beckman to open Class 2A District 3 play Friday, September 18. Hesse claimed two more career passing records for Waukon football in the victory, surpassing 1998 Waukon High School graduate Nick Rissman’s career passing yards total of 2,215 and career pass completions total of 163. Hesse completed 14 of 29 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown in the contest, that touchdown pass also furthering his career touchdown passes record to 31, a standard he broke in this season’s first game and previously set at 22 by his older brother, 2014 Waukon High School graduate Parker Hesse, during his senior season two years ago. It took the most balanced overall effort of the season for the Waukon football team to remain undefeated Friday, September 18 when the Indians faced cool, rainy weather and Dyersville Beckman, the first of back-to-back opponents from their own district who played all the way to the Class 2A State Play-Off Semifinals last season. A season-low 142 yards through the air were complemented nicely by a season-high 162 yards on the ground for the Indians, but a staunch defensive effort that limited the visiting Trailblazers to just 149 yards of total offense furthered that complete balance to result in a 14-3 victory for the Indians.
The Indians remain atop the Class 2A District 3 standings as the district’s lone undefeated team at 4-0. Perhaps the greatest challenge to that undefeated mark looms in front of the Indians this Friday, September 25 at defending Class 2A State Champion North Fayette Valley. The TigerHawks hold a 3-1 overall season record, including a 2-0 mark in Class 2A District 3 that includes a 38-15 win at Oelwein this past Friday.
