Curtis Laverne, the son of Edward and Evelyn (Schafer) Gramlich, was born February 5, 1933 in La Crosse, WI. Curtis spent his early years working on the family dairy farm. He played forward on the Lansing High School basketball team and graduated in 1951. After graduation, Curtis served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, completing basic training at Fort Chaffee, AR. Afterward, he was assigned to drive a heavy artillery and communication vehicle as a Private First Class in the 74th Field Artillery Battalion stationed in Nuremberg, Crailsheim and Rothenberg, West Germany.
Upon completing his military service, Curtis returned to Lansing and took over operation of the family farm on Mays Prairie where his great grandfather originally settled in the mid 1800s. He began dating Betty Fink and was united in marriage with her October 25, 1958 at the Federated Church in Lansing. To this union, a daughter and a son were born.
Curtis loved his life on the farm, comradery and friendship of many relatives, friends and neighbors, and companionship of his dogs. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to someone in need and felt honored to do so. Curtis also enjoyed traveling and made several trips to California, Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, Wyoming, Wisconsin and Australia.
Curtis spent his later years devoted to caring for his loving wife, Betty, who suffered a stroke in 2008. Curtis was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lansing.
