Waukon girls, boys track teams to compete at Class 2A State Track Meet this week

The Waukon girls and boys track teams will each be represented in multiple events at the Class 2A State Track Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines this week. Three boys will be competing in five individual events at this year’s season grand finale, while five Waukon girls will be competing in three different events including two individual events and one relay.

Thursday, May 19 will be the busiest day for the Waukon representatives, beginning with junior Tyler O’Neill in the 3200 meter run starting at approximately 10:10 a.m. for the 24-runner, one-time finals of that event. Junior Erika Johnson will be making a return trip to the season grand finale in the long jump, where she will compete Thursday at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the second of two flights, jumping fifth in that 12-competitor second flight.

Thursday’s competition for Waukon will continue with a pair of seniors taking to the track, with Madison Snitker competing in the first of three eight-runner preliminary heats of the 200 meter dash, beginning at approximately 12:40 p.m. Snitker will be running in Lane 6 of that initial heat, and the fastest eight times out of those three heats will then advance to the Saturday, May 21 200 meter dash finals scheduled for approximately 1:25 p.m.

Snitker will also anchor the 400 meter leg of the Indian girls’ sprint medley relay at this year’s State Meet, joining forces with fellow senior Nicole Behrend on the 200 meter leg and juniors Lanci Bulman and Regan Wasson each running a 100 meter leg to compete in that event Saturday, May 21 at about 9:12 a.m. The Indians are scheduled to start in Lane 2 in the third of three heats of that one-time final.

Peyton Hesse will be competing for the Indian track boys Thursday afternoon at approximately 1:40 p.m. in the Class 2A 400 meter dash. He will start in Lane 2 of the third of three eight-runner heats in that one-time finals event. Hesse will also compete Saturday morning at approximately 10:40 a.m. in the 800 meter run, lining up in the second of two 12-runner heats in that one-time final.

Fellow senior Wyatt Wille will compete in two events, beginning Friday, May 20 with a 9 a.m. competition in the Class 2A high jump, where he will be the ninth jumper in the 24-competitor field. Wille will also compete Friday at approximately 11:20 a.m. in the 400 meter hurdle finals, starting in Lane 1 of the first of three eight-man heats of the event.
