The Waukon bowling teams wrapped up the home portion of their schedules with a Friday, January 19 hosting of Oelwein. The end result of that final home match-up wasn’t much of a fond farewell to that home venue for the season, as the Indian girls fell by a score of 2204-1995 and the Waukon boys allowed just a four-pin opening round deficit to get away to a 2527-2464 defeat.

The Waukon girls fell victim to an Oelwein team that had all six of its players bowl well over a 200 series, while the Indians managed just half of that feat to trail by an early 1469-1226 margin. Each team had just one player roll a 300 series to lead their respective squads, Oelwein sophomore Brielle Belden rolling an event-high 321 series and junior Emma Roe leading the Indian effort with a 305 series comprised of consistent game totals of 152 and 153.

The Indian boys had the highest individual scorer but couldn’t find the overall balance against Oelwein, as the Huskies had four scorers roll above a 300 series and their fifth finish just below that level. The Indians, meanwhile, had just three of their scorers finish above 300, but their leading tally of 439 rolled by sophomore Matt Rozzell, consisting of a game-high 240 and a 199, helped the Indians trail by just a 1656-1652 result following the match’s first round.

The Indians won two of the five Baker round games, including sizable margins of 158-116 in game one and 207-157 in game four. However, Oelwein posted back-to-back wins of 214-155 and 214-134 in games two and three to more than counter that Indian comeback effort, also winning game five, 170-158, to further seal the 2527-2464 Indian defeat.

The home sweep suffered by the Indian bowlers leaves the Waukon girls with a 1-6 season record and drops the Indian boys’ record to 3-4 for the season. The two teams are scheduled to pull double-duty late this week, bowling a dual match at Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday, September 26 before competing in a weekend tournament hosted by Waterloo Columbus Saturday, January 27. The Indians will then bowl at Denver Friday, February 2.
