Donald Topel

Donald H. Topel, 82, of Waukon died Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 23 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at Sixteen Cemetery, rural Monona. Friends may call one hour before services Friday at the funeral home.

Donald Harry Topel was born November 7, 1935 in the Sixteen area near rural Monona, the son of Herman William and Selda Minnie (Timmerman) Topel. He attended the Sixteen school and worked on the farm until his dad passed away. Donnie then moved into Waukon and worked for Peterson Hardware and Quandahl’s Food Ranch before becoming a plumber with DeBuhr Plumbing and Heating.

May 28, 1988, Donnie married Deloris Mae (Malli) Kolsrud at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville. He and Deloris enjoyed driving around Sixteen every day and taking pictures and also liked painting ceramics together.

Donnie was a member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church. He was an avid mushroom hunter and lotto player, liked listening to country music and going bowling. Besides ceramics, Donnie was a very talented artist and painted pictures as well. Mostly, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his brothers, Wayne (Bernice) Topel of Monona and Gary (Jamie) Topel of Corpus Christi, TX; his stepchildren, Roger (Donna) Kolsrud of Waukon, Dorothy Diersen of St. Olaf and Lyle Kolsrud of Waukon; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Donnie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Deloris, in 2017; his grandson, Thomas Larkin; his siblings, Wilbert, Alfred and Robert Topel, Eileen Shindoll, Darlene Keehn and two infant siblings; his sister-in-law, Sharon Topel; and two stepsons, Leland and Wayne Kolsrud.
