Thomas Mooney

Thomas “Tom” Michael Mooney, 82, of Marion, formerly of Waukon, passed peacefully Wednesday, March 14, 2018. A Funeral Mass was held Monday, March 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion by Father Mark Kwenin. A private committal service will take place at a later date. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion assisted the family.

Tom was born July 1, 1935 in Harpers Ferry, the son of Harold and Helen (Schwartzhoff) Mooney. After growing up on the family farm near Harpers Ferry, Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force in April of 1957. August 22, 1957, Tom and his love, Carole Ann Connor, were united in marriage.

Active duty required Tom and Carole to move around a bit, ultimately landing them at Edwards Air Force Base in California until Tom’s release from active duty in the early 1960s. During this time their two sons were born, Tim in 1958 and Sean in 1959. In the mid-1960s, Tom, Carole and their sons made their way to Marion, where Tom started learning the electrician and heating and air conditioning trades. Over the decades, while learning from others, and later after starting his own heating and air conditioning business, Tom enjoyed connecting with customers. His knowledge, kindness and wit made for many happy ongoing customer relationships.

Tom was generous, giving time to his church, as well as serving on various boards for the City of Marion. He was also generous with family, friends and neighbors. Later in life, Tom and Carole loved to travel with their family, and their generosity was very memorable during these times, but also in smaller ways every day. During Tom’s final years, after the ravages of disease had taken many things from him, he still had a generous, playful (and sometimes mischievous) manner.

Tom is survived by his sons, Tim (Lisa) Mooney and Sean Mooney; four grandsons, Mike, Spencer, Austin and Bryce; one brother, Maury (Kay) Mooney; a sister-in-law, Micki Connor; a brother-in-law, Frank Norton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Carole; his parents; Carole’s parents, Mike and Virginia Connor; his sisters, Mona Chapman (and her husband Dale Chapman) and Jeanne Mooney-Norton; Carole’s brothers, Bob Connor and Jim Connor; and a nephew, Mark Mooney.

The family wishes to thank the Meth-Wick Community for its professional and loving care during Tom’s final years.
