Letter to the Editor: Remember, when you vote

To the Editor:

What should matter? Each and every one of us matter.

It should not matter if you are a homeowner or a large money company, we should all be treated equally, fairly and with respect.

It should have mattered that the property line was the same for 112 years.

It should have mattered that in 1989 the City of Waukon, with an annexation, accepted the property line as it was since the late 1800s. Then, 22 years later, they say it is wrong. The other two changes in 30 years did not change the property line.

It should have mattered that the property owner took care of and paid property tax on that same property.

It should have mattered that the property owner was still paying property tax on that property after it was sold and the earth was being moved. Calling about this, I was told, legally, they can not change it for a year. Then how could it have been sold, legally, within that year?

Oh, but they can do a one-year abatement, only to legalize that sale of property. It should have mattered that the homeowner did not accept the one-year abatement. But they can just credit the homeowner’s property tax account. It did not matter the other 111 years.

There are some who think it is OK to take from someone who is no longer with us. That took only 15 days.

Watching the news, some steal from porches or your loved one’s final resting place. Was this different, or would it be worse if it was done with the assistance of the City and the County?

All this should have mattered, was it done with fairness, respect and equality? You would say no if it happened to you.

We do exist, and those that are no longer with us did exist, and still do in our heart.

In voting in the upcoming elections, I hope we get someone who knows the meanings of honesty, fairness and equality. Because each and every one of us matter.

I may have moved, but I did not walk away.

With lost respect,
