The Waukon girls track team competed in its two most important meets of the season within four nights of one another, bringing the 2018 track season to an end for many of its team members but proving to extend that season for a small handful of Lady Indians. The track Tribe opened the week by placing sixth at the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet hosted by Charles City Monday, May 7 after that meet had been postponed from Thursday, May 3 by stormy weather.

The Lady Indians then competed to end or extend their season at their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Osage High School Thursday, May 10, the track Tribe placing seventh as a team but having three events advance on to this season’s State Track Meet. Those qualifications for the season grand finale include freshman Annika Headington in the shot put, sophomore Ellec Armstead in the high jump and the 4x800 relay crew of senior Lauren Elliott and freshmen Bailey Shafer, Maddy Waters and Regan Griffith. Further details about their State Meet competition later this week in Des Moines appear elsewhere on these Sports pages in a shaded box in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.

State Qualifying Meet ...
The Class 2A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Osage Thursday, May 10 meant the end of the 2018 track season for many of the track and field athletes competing there. That proved to be the case for a majority of the Waukon girls track team, but for a handful of individuals in three different events, it proved to be a leap pad to every track and field athlete’s ultimate destination, as the Lady Indians qualified three events for the season grand finale State Track Meet to help lead the way to 56 team points and a seventh-place team finish in the meet’s 12-team field.
