Harlen Koenig

Harlen Koenig, 100, of Postville died Saturday, June 16, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 20 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville with Rev. Lynn Noel and Rev. Dave Lenth as the officiants. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery, rural Waukon. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. There will also be a one-hour visitation before services at the church Wednesday.

Harlen William Fredrick Koenig was born November 29, 1917 to Fred and Alma (Schlie) Koenig in Postville. He attended Oak Hill School in rural Castalia through the eighth grade.

Harlen was united in marriage with Lorraine Henning December 8, 1938 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Eight children were born to this union: Shirley, Donald, Luann, Duane, Douglas, Bradley, Peggy and Lisa. They celebrated 76 years of marriage together.

Harlen was a farmer and then became a carpenter. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, mowing lawn, playing cards, and in his later years doing scrapbooking, which he learned from his mother when he was younger. Harlen was a John Deere fan. He also enjoyed listening to country and bluegrass music, as well as playing his harmonica.

Harlen loved to keep Lorraine’s geraniums after she passed. He loved homemade tomato soup, maple syrup, butterscotch malts, coffee and sweets. Harlen had a great memory and enjoyed reminiscing with everyone.

Harlen is survived by his eight children: Shirley (Jerry) Blakeslee of Boscobel, WI, Donald (Judy) Koenig of Wakefield, NE, Luann (Calvin) Vacek of Racine, WI, Duane (Norma) Koenig of Postville, Doug (Rhonda) Koenig of Frankville, Bradley (special friend, Rhonda) Koenig of Denver, Peggy (Brian) Keuning of Menlo and Lisa (Brian) Snitker of Frankville; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; his brother, Verne Koenig of Decorah; his sisters-in-law, Ruby Koenig of Postville, Gertrude Hagen of Waukon and Betty (Virgil) Opfer of Waukon; his brother-in-law, Robert (Dorothy) Henning of Ossian; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Kris Meyer and Janessa and Mason Zweibohmer.

Harlen was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; his parents, Fred and Alma Koenig; four brothers, Leonard, Milton, Loren and Earl; and a daughter-in-law, Sally Koenig.
