Kee softball team’s undefeated week includes yet another mercy-rule sweep of an Upper Iowa Conference opponent and championship finish at Decorah Tournament

On the move ... Kee softball sophomore third baseman Kristina Dibert rounds second base and heads for third in the Hawks’ Monday, June 18 home doubleheader sweep of Central Elkader. Dibert was two-for-four at the plate in game one of the twinbill with both a run scored and run driven in, and she also scored two runs in the nightcap of the home double-dip. Photo by Macie Hill. A busy week for the Kee softball team got considerably lighter with the rainy weather that rolled through the area this past week, cutting the Lady Hawks’ game load nearly in half by week’s end but all five of their games played ending up in the win column. The lone competition that remained prior to the weekend for the Hawks was a Monday, June 18 home doubleheader sweep of Central Elkader by scores of 12-2 in five innings and 12-0 in three innings. The Hawks then rolled through the Decorah Tournament Saturday, June 23, winning all three of their games by scores of 4-0 over St. Ansgar, 13-0 in three innings over Waukon and 12-6 over Decorah to win the tournament and improve to 24-4 on the season, including a yet unblemished 12-0 mark in Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) play.

The Hawks are next scheduled to wrap up their regular season with a now full slate of games, beginning with four straight UIC doubleheaders that include Monday, June 25 at MFL/MarMac before making up their June 20 postponement at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, June 26 (to begin at 10 a.m. due to lack of officials that evening) and then playing Wednesday, June 27 at West Central. The Kee diamond dwellers will then make up their June 21 postponement at home against South Winneshiek Thursday, June 28 before playing in the Don Bosco Tournament Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30.

Kee softball to begin postseason tournament play at home July 3

The Kee softball team will be playing its entire Class 1A Region 4 Tournament schedule on its home field, receiving a first-round bye before beginning with a quarterfinal match-up in New Albin Tuesday, July 3 at 7 p.m. against the winner of a first-round match-up between Postville and Central Elkader. The quarterfinal winner will then move on to a Friday, July 6 regional semifinal contest also to be played at New Albin beginning at 7 p.m. That semifinals opponent will emerge from first-round match-ups featuring Edgewood-Colesburg vs. East Buchanan and Central City vs. Starmont.

The regional semifinal winner will then advance on to the regional championship game to be played Monday, July 9 at 7 p.m. on the home field of the highest remaining seed in the Region 4 bracket, with the number one-rated Hawks being the bracket’s highest-seeded team in that Region 4 bracket. That regional championship opponent will emerge from the opposite side of the Region 4 bracket and could be either ninth-rated Lisbon or 15th-rated Calamus-Wheatland (the other two teams to receive a first-round bye in the Region 4 bracket), or Easton Valley, Springville, Marquette Catholic or Midland. The Region 4 champion will earn qualification for the Class 1A State Tournament to be played in Fort Dodge Monday, July 16 through Friday, July 20.
