Robey Memorial Library Summer Reading Program set to begin; Wide variety of activities and events available throughout the summer

Robey Memorial Library in Waukon has an abundance of activities and events planned for the Summer of 2018. Listed below are descriptions of those activities and events. All programs are free of charge.

Kick-off of the Children’s Summer Reading Program (SRP) at Robey Memorial Library will take place the week of July 9 with scheduled events including Reading Challenge Registration, and a Library Scavenger Hunt throughout the week.

READING CHALLENGE
The four-week Reading Challenge runs from Monday, July 9 through Saturday, August 4. Participants, ages infant through sixth grade (completed), earn prizes for weekly participation, enter a drawing for special prizes, and display their reading totals in the library. Visit the Robey Memorial Library website or stop in to pick up a reading log and to get more details.

As in past years, Reading Challenge participants display a Library Champion sign in their yard. Local residents and visitors can watch for these as they drive around town.

KIDS MAKE-AND-TAKE
Kids Make-and-Take sessions will be held Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-3:30 p.m. July 11, 18, 25 and August 1. Participants may come in anytime during that two-hour period to participate in a project. The planned Make-and-Take creations are available for viewing at the library; kids will be Painting Rocks and making Twig Percussion Sticks, CD Weavings and Rainsticks.

FINE FORGIVENESS
Again this year, Fine Forgiveness is available for all who participate in one of Robey Memorial Library’s Reading Programs. Children and Teens who register for the Summer Reading Challenge July 9-August 4 can have their overdue fines forgiven. Adults who read at least one book for the 2018 Adult Reading Challenge before August 4 can also have their overdue fines forgiven (Be sure to remind the library staff of participation in either of the reading programs). Fine Forgiveness does not include lost or damaged items on a patron’s library account.

AT THE FAIR
Robey Memorial Library (RML) Trustees and staff will be available at a booth in the Pavilion during the Allamakee County Fair Wednesday, July 18-Sunday, July 22 providing information and answering questions regarding the library collection, services, etc. The library will also have a fun photo booth available during Pavilion hours at the fair.

Families and children are encouraged to participate in a Story Walk, where they read a popular children’s story by walking from page to page as they stroll the fairgrounds. The starting point of the Story Walk is at the Robey Memorial Library booth in the Pavilion with interactive materials available as the book is completed. Additional library activities will be taking place during Kid’s Day Friday, July 20 from 12-4 p.m.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMMING CONTINUES
Robey Memorial Library continues its year-round programming through the summer with Tuesday Story Time held each Tuesday morning from 10:30-11 a.m. Scheduled readers through the summer are Sue Kiesau, Ross Geerdes of Allamakee County Conservation (second Tuesday) and library staff. Afternoon with Ross is scheduled for the fourth Tuesdays, June 26 and July 24, from 3:30-4 p.m. He will share information and hands-on materials about Lightning Bugs and Crayfish.

SUMMER EXPLORER SERIES
Summer Explorer Series that was held in June will resume the first two Wednesdays in August from 10-11 a.m. in the Robey Memorial Library Community Room. The August 1 program will be Karst & Conservation (sinkholes and caves) with Sara Berges from the Allamakee County Soil and Water Conservation District and the August 8 program is Rock Painting with library staff in conjunction with the “Allamakee Libraries Rock” Community Program.

TEEN SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
The Teen Summer Reading Challenge begins Monday, July 9. Teenagers in grades 7-12 are encouraged to pick up or print a Reading Log. Teens who read or participate in activities can earn free books and prizes. Teen Summer Reading events include:
• Teen Make & Takes: Drop in Wednesdays, July 11, 18 and 25 and August 1 between 1:30-3:30 p.m. Participants will be making Cactus Painted Rocks, Disco Balls, CD Scratch Art and Book Folding Art.
• Teen Book Club will be held Wednesdays, July 11 and August 8 at 10:30 a.m. The group will be sharing about books with at least one non-human character in July. In August, the group will be discussing “Alive” by Scott Sigler. Teens who participate in the June or August Book Club receive a free copy of “Alive” from the Robey Memorial Library Foundation.  Snacks are provided during the discussions.

ADULT READING CHALLENGE AND OTHER EVENTS
Adults are encouraged to participate in the Libraries Rock Reading Challenge through December 31. Receive a drawing entry for reading from one of 12 pre-selected categories: book in a series; tragedy - fiction or non-fiction; funny - fiction or non-fiction; graphic novel; recommended book - fiction or non-fiction; learn something new; cross-cultural author or theme; written under a pseudonym; LISTEN to an audiobook; genre or subject never read before; holiday theme; or music theme. Receive a bonus entry for reading a book with a song lyric in the title.

Prizes will be given by random drawing after the challenge is complete December 31 of this year. Prizes include a Kindle/tablet mp3 device, Waukon Bucks and a local business Gift Certificate bundle. Books must be read during the 2018 calendar year to be eligible for the drawing. Entry forms can be submitted to the library or online throughout the year.

• Free monthly programs:
- Getting Started with Bullet Journals, Thursday, June 28, 5:30 p.m.
- Concert with Mark Armstrong, storyteller and musician, Thursday, July 26, 5:30 p.m.
- Art Journaling, Thursday, August 30, 5:30 p.m.
• Musical Matinees:  Showing “Pirates of Penzance” Tuesday, July 3 at 1 p.m. and “The Music Man” Tuesday, August 7 at 1 p.m.

TABLE GAME DAY
All patrons are encouraged to bring their family and friends to Table Game Day Saturday, July 14 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Learn to play the game Settlers of Catan or play any table game from the library’s selection.
