Myrtle Egan

Myrtle M. Egan, 95, of Waukon died Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, August 6 at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church in rural Lansing with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial was at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry.

Myrtle Mary Egan was born June 6, 1923 in Lafayette Township, Allamakee County, the daughter of John “Joe” and Cecilia (Conway) Delaney. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church in rural Lansing. Myrtle attended elementary school at Wexford and Russell country schools; she attended one year of high school in Harpers Ferry. She then stayed at home to help take care of her younger brothers and sister.

Later, Myrtle moved to Minneapolis, MN and lived with her aunt, Mary Evans, while working at Strutwear Knitting Company for a year. She then got a job in the shipping department for Sears & Roebuck, which was one of her favorite jobs. Myrtle came home to help her mother cook for the threshing crew, but was not able to return to Minneapolis due to the polio outbreak. She then went to work at the toy factory in Lansing.

October 9, 1947, she married John Egan at Immaculate Conception Wexford. Myrtle also worked at the speaker factory in McGregor and for more than 20-plus years at Northern Engraving. In July 2016, she moved to Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.

She was a member of St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry, where she taught catechism and was on the Rosary Society. Myrtle enjoyed baking, especially bread, homemade cinnamon rolls and apple pie bars. She also liked gardening, canning for her large family, crocheting and making blankets for all her grandchildren. Family was very important to her and she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Myrtle also enjoyed taking trips to Ireland and Germany. She was a skilled harmonica player and entertained other residents at Good Sam with her music.

Myrtle is survived by her children: John (Deb) of Luana, Gary (Cindy) of Waukon, Joe (Mary) of Waterville, Pat (Sarah) of Monona, Mark (Lori) of Waukon, Mike (Laurie) of Monona, Judy (Bruce) Cliff of Patch Grove, WI and Jerry of Harpers Ferry; 30 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren, with three more on the way; her brothers: Lester Delaney, Mark (Margie) Delaney, Joseph Delaney and Pat (Aileen) Delaney; her sister, Delores (Bob) Mooney; a sister-in-law, Rose Ella Valley; a brother-in-law, Vernis Haberichter; a son-in-law, Tom (Stephanie) Rose; and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1982; her father- and mother-in-law, Timothy and Mary (Donahue) Egan; a son, Jim Egan; a daughter, Catherine “Kate” Rose; a daughter-in-law, Joni Egan; her brothers: Aelred (Dorothea) Delaney, John Delaney and Martin (Helen) Delaney; and her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Mary Delaney, Lore Delaney, Mary (Lawrence) Benda, Catherine and Edith (Paul) Ferring, Helen Haberichter, Harold Valley and Tim Egan.
