Duane Duvel

Duane R. Duvel, 84, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, August 11, 2018, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, August 15, at The Old Rossville Store in Rossville, IA, from 4-6 p.m. with a sharing time at 5:30 p.m. Private family military graveside rites will be held in Salem Cemetery in rural Waukon with Pastor Keith Selberg officiating. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is assisting the family with arrangements.
 
Duane Ronald Duvel was born April 13, 1934, in rural Waukon, IA, the son of Clarence and Caroline (Miller) Duvel. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1951. Duane served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. September 20, 1953, he married Shirley Hanke at Salem United Church of Christ. They farmed together on the Duvel family farm in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon for 30 years. Duane also worked at Jim’s Full Service, Reel Core, and for Carquest in Waukon and Decorah until he became ill.
 
He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and the American Legion. Duane received the Quilt of Honor on June 20, 2018. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, especially euchre, and spending time with his family and friends.
 
Survivors include his wife Shirley Duvel of Waukon; his children: Kathy (Mac) Greentree of Postville, IA, and John (Debbie McCarthy) Duvel of Canton, MA; six grandchildren: Amanda (Andy) Kerner, Mikael and Adam Bjerke, Shana (Larry) Sabourin, and Derek and Analiese Duvel; two great-grandchildren: Ryan and Mitchell Guese; and a sister DiAnna Higgins of Marina, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law John Higgins.
 
Honorary casketbearers are Duane’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
