It was a bit of a challenge for the Waukon girls cross country team to gets its first competition of the season this past week, but once they did the Lady Indians made the most of it, sweeping the MFL/MarMac Invitational at both the varsity and junior varsity levels with some domination of the top-10 individual placewinnings. The distance Tribe first had its originally scheduled Tuesday, August 28 Oelwein Invitational canceled due to rainy weather, and then also had a schedule-added Charles City meet Thursday, August 30 canceled due to remnants of that rainy weather, before ultimately ending up just about 20 minutes down the road to top all teams at the Tri-City Golf Club near Luana Thursday, August 30.
“On a very challenging course, we were able to come out on top in the junior varsity and varsity team races,” Waukon girls cross country coach Brett Egan said. “This is the first team victory in quite a few years for the program, which is a reflection of the work the girls have done up to this point. The slower times reflect the challenging course, but I am very encouraged by the effort the girls put forth at a meet we did not plan to compete in just 12 hours before the race.”
The Indians were next scheduled to compete at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational Tuesday, September 4 (a meet that has now been postponed to Thursday, September 6) before taking part in a meet this Saturday, September 8 at Luther College in Decorah. The Tribe will then travel to Starmont Tuesday, September 11.
