Waukon football to open Class 2A State Play-Off journey at home against Union this Friday

The Waukon football team will begin defense of its first-ever football State Championship this Friday, October 26 by opening the Class 2A State Play-Offs with a home game against Union of La Porte City in a game beginning at 7 p.m. The Knights hold a 6-3 record and come out of a three-way tie in Class 2A District 7 after having their own undefeated district season denied by a 26-16 loss to West Marshall this past Friday. The Knights, West Marshall and Benton each ended up with a single district loss, with Benton having defeated West Marshall and Union having defeated Benton earlier in the season. That first-round match-up is part of Class 2A’s Bracket C in this season’s new initial four-bracket play-off system in each class. The other half of the Tribe’s Bracket C features a match-up of District 3 champion Crestwood (6-3 overall) hosting District 2 runner-up Algona (8-1 overall), with the two winning teams from this Friday’s first-round match-ups facing off the following Friday, November 2 at a site to be determined, but also beginning at 7 p.m. Once those four initial brackets are played out, the Iowa High School Athletic Association will then seed the remaining four teams into a pair of semifinal match-ups to be played Saturday, November 10 in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls at either 4 p.m. or 7 p.m., with those semifinal winners then matching up in the Class 2A State Championship game scheduled for Friday, November 16 at 2 p.m. in the UNI-Dome. The other three initial brackets in the Class 2A State Play-Off system include the following first-round match-ups: Bracket A: Carroll Kuemper (5-4) at PCM Monroe (9-0) and West Marshall (7-2) at Williamsburg (6-3) Bracket B: Spirit Lake (7-2) at Boyden Hull/Rock Valley (8-1) and OABCIG (7-2) at Southeast Valley (7-2) Bracket D: Greene County (8-1) at Benton (8-1) and Chariton (8-1) at West Liberty (8-1).
