Gladys Mae Heitman, 90, of New Albin passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Thornton Manor Nursing Center, Lansing. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 2, 2019 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Wheatland, rural New Albin. Pastor Paul Burgess officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Gladys was born January 25, 1929 to George and Caroline (Meyer) Meyer. She was baptized and confirmed at St John’s United Church of Christ, Wheatland. She attended rural school in Iowa Township. June 9, 1950, she married Elmer Heitman at St. John’s Church and together they farmed in Union City Township. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2010.
Gladys was an active member of St John’s Women’s fellowship and choir. She enjoyed quilting with the other women at the church. She served on many committees; 4-H, senior citizens, and did volunteer work at Thornton Manor and at Makee Manor. While Elmer was alive, they enjoyed square dancing and traveling; Switzerland, Alaska, Canada and Arizona, to name a few. She was an avid bird watcher, loved tending to her flower gardens, and loved playing card and board games with her family.
Survivors include her children, Alan (Lori) Heitman of New Albin, Darlene (Dave) Eggum of La Crosse, WI, Jack (Barb) Heitman of Peoria, IL and David (Janette) Heitman of Lansing; a son-in-law, Todd Blanchard; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grand-children; her sisters-in law, Gladys Tegtmeier and Delores Brumm; many nieces and nephews; and two life-long special friends, Violet Beneke and Stella Burmester.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, George and Caroline Meyer; her husband, Elmer Heitman; her daughters, Carolyn Aitchison and Lori Blanchard; her sisters, Irma Johnson and Lillian Wuennecke; and a brother-in law, Roy Wuennecke.
