Paul Hager

Paul R. Hager, 80, of Montpelier, VT died Friday, March 29, 2019 at the Central Vermont Medical Center. Calling hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier, VT. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Paul was born October 3, 1938 in Waukon, the son of Robert and F. Marian (Raisty) Hager. He attended elementary school in Waukon and later graduated as the class valedictorian from Waukon High School’s Class of 1957. He then attended the University of Iowa, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1961. It was there that he was a member of the National Honor Society, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He also graduated with Highest Distinction. He then received his Master’s degree in Psychology from Yale University in 1965.

Paul began working for the Vermont Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in 1970. It was there that he worked in the Foster Care Program for the State of Vermont before retiring in 1997. After retirement, Paul found great joy in volunteering at the Barre Town School and the Barre Town Summer School Program.

Survivors include his niece, Sarah Crone, and her husband, Leon, and their children, Connor and Ava, of Mechanicsburg, PA; his niece, Laura Martino, and her husband, Peter, and their children, Vincent and Angela, of Clinton, NY; his nephew, Peter Dohner, and his wife, Beth Ann, and their children, Logan and Forrest, of Dillsburg, PA; his sister-in-law, Linda Hager of Dillsburg, PA; and a sister, Jean Hager of Waterloo. He was predeceased by a brother, Roger Hager.
