Delbert Timmerman

Delbert G. Timmerman, Sr., 90, of Lansing died Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing.

Delbert Grover Timmerman, Sr. was born December 12, 1928 on his parents’ farm in Suttle Creek, rural Volney, the son of Grover and Hazel (Schlitter) Timmerman. He attended Waterville Elementary and Waterville High School. Delbert farmed with his parents in French Creek Township, rural Lansing and from 1953-1955 he served in the U.S. Army with the 866th Engineer Aviation Battalion and SCARWAF unit.

June 2, 1956, he married Betty Lou Spores at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lansing. In 1961, they moved to Cedar Rapids, where Delbert worked at Wilson Foods until they moved back to the Lansing area in 1979. Delbert was the janitor for Waukon High School until 1994, then became the Allamakee County courthouse janitor, retiring in 2008. In 2017, Delbert was confirmed in the Catholic Church and became a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. Also in 2017, he took the opportunity to go on the Freedom Honor Flight.

He enjoyed living on his hobby farm and loved the animals they kept, especially their dogs and cats. Delbert loved feeding and watching the hummingbirds and other song birds and enjoyed gardening as well. He was a very caring and compassionate man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed going to church, visiting with family and friends, and playing cards.

Delbert is survived by his three sons: Bob (Mary) of Waukon, Delbert “Tim” Jr. (Brenda) of Waukon, and Craig (Darcey) of Spring Grove, MN; eight grandchildren: Ryan, Tiffany, Josh, Christian, Keisha, Amanda, David and Maleki; 11 great-grandchildren: Jade, Porter, Amelia, Hazel, Isaiah, Farren, Isadore, Finneas, Lily, Tristan and Aiden; and his sister, Arlene Yearous of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty, who died in 2015; two grandsons, Daniel and Shane; two sisters, Jeanette Goodnoe and Ruth Timmerman; two brothers, Duane and LaVern Timmerman; and a brother-in-law, Clifton Yearous.

Honorary casketbearers were Delbert’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were Roger and Kevin Bublitz, Brian Manning, Alex Cote’, and Dennis and Ralph Reppe.
