Kee girls track team makes more history at the Big Blue Oval, shares Class 1A State Team Championship

Tracking more Hawk history ... Members of the Kee girls track team who qualified for this year’s State Track and Field Meet display all the pageantry that goes along with winning the Class 1A team State Championship at the season grand finale. The first-ever team State Championship in Kee girls track history was actually shared with Alburnett after each team scored 36 points at the season-ending event, with Kee also winning a further historical three relay State Championships to fuel that team championship fire. Three relay championships in 4x800, Distance Medley and 4x400 fuel the fire, points in individual events by Brennan and Meyer prove to be pivotal in first-ever team title

“A title a day helps bring a trophy your way!”

Although that’s not exactly how the old saying goes, that’s exactly what the doctor ordered for the Kee girls track team in writing yet another chapter in the often recently revamped history of Lady Hawk athletics. Behind the strength of three relay championships and two other point-scoring individual finishes at the State Track and Field Meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday-Saturday, May 16-18, the Kee girls not only won their first running event State Championships in program history, but used those three event titles - one each day - to further fuel their way to a share of their first-ever Class 1A Team State Championship, scoring 36 team points to tie with Alburnett for this year’s Class 1A crown.

“These girls never cease to amaze me,” Kee girls track coach Chad Winters praised. “The two seniors (Katie Brennan and Makayla Walleser) are as mentally tough as they come and that has rubbed off on the other girls. None of them want to let another teammate down and they are willing to push themselves to their limits to do that. I couldn’t be prouder of what they accomplished this weekend. It’s a testament to what type of girls they are, their work ethic, their commitment, and their attitude.  What an unbelievable weekend!”
