Veterans Memorial Hospital will be hosting its biannual Safety Day Camp for children ages 6 to 14 Thursday, June 13, at the Allamakee Fairgrounds from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp is open to all children in the area. It is a true safety camp that instructs many areas of safety that address every child’s life.

Each year, many children are killed or injured on America’s farms and at home. This summer, safety day camps, such as the one being hosted by Veterans Memorial Hospital, are being held to teach children how to prevent injuries and reduce the risk of accidents. During the camps, children participate in interactive activities that reinforce the importance of taking responsibility for their own safety, respecting parents’ safety rules and sharing safety tips with their family and friends.

Individual topics covered at this year’s safety camp will include the following:

- ATV & Motorcycle Safety
- Farm Equipment Safety
- Electrical Safety
- Lawnmower/Weed Eater/Chainsaws
- Pinch Point Safety
- Bicycle Rodeo
- Grain Bin Safety
- Internet Safety
- Fire Arm Safety
- First Aid
- Water Safety
- Drone Safety
- Snake Awareness.

There will also be large group demonstrations showing power take-off entanglement and heavy gates or a tractor dual falling on an object. Plus it is hoped there will be an actual helicopter fly-in if conditions permit.

Parents can register their children to participate in the camp by picking up a registration form at the main entrance of Veterans Memorial Hospital or from the Allamakee County Extension Office. Registration for the camp may also be done online at www.veteransmemorialhospital.com. Registrations must be returned to the hospital.

Only the first 150 applications will be accepted. A small registration fee for the event covers lunch, snacks, a take-home goodie bag, first aid kit and a safety day camp t-shirt. For more information, call Veterans Memorial Hospital at 563-568-3411.
