Bernadine Jones

Bernadine E. Jones, 86, of Waukon, formerly of rural Lansing, died Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 29 at 11 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, June 28 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Bernadine Ellen Jones was born February 18, 1933 in rural Froelich, the daughter of Irving T. and Rita E. (Lestina) Hartong. She was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville and in 1952 graduated from Waterville High School. Bernadine then moved to Waterloo, where she was a nanny and then went on to receive her cosmetology degree from Americana University of Beauty in Des Moines in 1953. After graduation she was a beautician in Lansing and Decorah.

October 3, 1954, Bernadine married Emmet C. Jones in Mauston, WI. To this union nine children were born. Bernadine was a homemaker while her kids were home; later she was a child care provider. She also worked as a nurse aide for the Allamakee County Care Facility and then as a cook for Thornton Manor in Lansing.

She was an active volunteer for the Allamakee ARC and served as president and vice president. Bernadine was also a member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and the ladies circles. She had an artistic side and liked doing crafts, crocheting and painting ceramics. She also enjoyed gardening, baking and spending time with her family.

Bernadine is survived by her husband of 64 years, Emmet Jones of Waukon; her children: Debra (Pat) McGeough and Mary (Tim) Kelly, both of Waukon, Rodney (Rita) Jones of Strawberry Point, Diane (Marvin) Cunningham of Rosebud, TX, Ellen (Kevin) Krousie of Waukon, Paula (Roger) Goeke of Rosebud, TX, and Wanda (Pat) Schellsmidt and Bruce Jones, both of Waukon; 14 grandchildren: Jason and Jay McGeough, Brad and Glen Palmer, Lydia (Jones) Guyer, Quinn (Jones) Corbin, Cameron Jones, Shane and Kelly Hughes, Sarah (Krousie) Pegler, Melissa and Roger Goeke Jr., and Cassie and Noah Schellsmidt; 22 great-grandchildren: Shelby Shupe, Levi McGeough, Kristen and Mason McGeough, Adrianna and Avery Rocksvold, Kendall Palmer, Kayla and Carly Palmer, Hailee (Guyer) Roamer, Seth and Camille Guyer, Tayton Jones, Izabella and Arianna Corbin, Lexi and Jakson Hughes, Brooklyn Gorman, Emma and Alexander Pegler, and Trey and Piper Goeke; three great-great-grandchildren: Jaxsyn and Owen Bunts and Calvin Roamer; her sister, Barb (Dennis) Nebendahl of Waterville; her sisters-in-law: Grace Groves of Omaha, NE, Lucille Dlouhy of Edgewood, Anaruth Dimmer of Dubuque and Carol (Willie) Buerger of Garber; a brother-in-law, Everett (Fran) Jones of Dubuque, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Dennis Irving Jones; two grandchildren, Kelcy and Zachary Jones; three sisters, Alberta Lorenz-Benthaud, Vivian (Earl) Iverson and Marjorie (Ron) Miller; her brothers-in-law, Virgil Groves, Lyle Dimmer and Leonard Dlouhy; and her father- and mother-in-law, Leo and Ruth Jones.

Honorary casketbearers are Quinn Corbin, Melissa Goeke, Lydia Guyer, Kelly Huges, Sarah Pegler and Cassie Schellsmidt. Casketbearers are Jason and Jay McGeough, Brad and Glen Palmer, Cameron Jones, Shane Hughes, Roger Goeke Jr., Noah Schellsmidt, Scott Iverson and Randy Nebendahl.
