Softball Hawks have UIC win streak halted at 70 games by same team that last beat them four years ago, finish third at Decorah Tournament

Looking to connect ... Kee softball senior third baseman/pitcher Makayla Walleser keeps her eyes on an incoming pitch in the Hawks’ home doubleheader loss to North Fayette Valley Wednesday, June 19. Walleser went two-for-four in the second game of that twinbill loss, belting a double and a single to score a team-high two runs. Photo by Macie Hill. The Kee softball team played to a 6-3 record in a full week of games this past week, first playing six games in three nights before playing three games in a single-day Saturday tournament. Most notable within that busy week was the extension of the Lady Hawks’ win streak spanning four seasons of Upper Iowa Conference games to 70 consecutive games before that streak was finally snapped by the last team to beat them in UIC play midway through the 2015 season.

The Kee softball girls began the week with a pair of Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) sweeps to push that league victory streak to 70 games, first downing Central Elkader, 6-1 and 14-2 in five innings Monday, June 17 before doing likewise at Turkey Valley Tuesday, June 18 in a doubleheader postponed from Wednesday, June 12, 9-1 and 20-7. The Hawk diamond dwellers then suffered their first UIC loss just over four years to the day since their last such loss, being swept in a home UIC doubleheader Wednesday, June 19 by North Fayette, 10-2 and 4-3, with the TigerHawks being the last team to defeat the Kee girls, way back on June 18, 2015. The Hawks wrapped up their busy week winning two of three games at the annual Decorah Tournament, defeating Osage, 14-2 in four innings, before falling to Waukon, 7-6, in the semifinals, but then bouncing back with a 14-0 win over Riceville in four innings to claim third place in this year’s eight- team tournament field.

Holding a 14-14 season record, 10-2 in Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) play, the softball Hawks were next scheduled to wrap up their UIC schedule with another pair of home doubleheaders in league play, hosting MFL/MarMac Monday, June 24 and then West Central Wednesday, June 26, before playing in the Don Bosco Tournament Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29. The Kee girls will then bring their regular season to a close with a final pair of home games, hosting Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday, July 2 and then Class 1A third-rated Clarksville Wednesday, July 3. Class 1A regional tournament play begins July 8, with pairings yet to be determined.
