Kee baseball team rides four-game win streak to end regular season, begin postseason tournament play, including 16-1 District win over Turkey Valley

Homerun hurrah! ... Kee baseball senior shortstop Josh Walleser is greeted by his teammates after belting a two-run homerun in the fourth inning of the Hawks’ 16-1 first-round district tournament win at home over Turkey Valley Saturday, July 13. Walleser’s round-tripper was his only hit and followed three consecutive walks he drew on his way to scoring three runs and driving in three more. The Kee baseball team both began and ended this past week with dates that involved victories over Turkey Valley, the first of those further clinching a second-place finish in the final Upper Iowa Conference standings and the second getting the Hawks’ postseason journey successfully underway. The Kee boys opened the week at Turkey Valley, sweeping two games as part of a triangular event Monday, July 8, 12-2 in five innings over the Trojans and 3-2 over West Fork. A Tuesday, July 9 non-conference date at Riceville was postponed to Thursday, July 11, with the Hawks hanging a 14-1 mercy-rule win over the host Wildcats to wrap up their regular season with a 23-8 season record that includes a 10-2 mark in Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) play.

Kee’s postseason road began at home against that same Turkey Valley squad Saturday, July 13, the Hawks taking care of the Trojans once again by a 16-1 count in just four innings in the opening round of Class 1A District 6 Tournament play. That win advances the Hawks to a Tuesday, July 16 district semifinals match-up with South Winneshiek at Calmar, with further details about Kee’s additional postseason tournament trail being published in a shaded box elsewhere on the same Sports pages in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.
