June was a success for 10th Hour summer program, next programming begins August 5 ...

The 10th Hour Middle School summer program in the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) had many adventures during the month of June. The first week was filled with information from Beth Shafer as she presented the students with experiences of being a pilot and ended with a visit to the Waukon Airport, as pictured in the photo at center. The students climbed aboard two different planes belonging to local pilots Jim Wadsworth and Richard Loven, who taught the students “all there is to know about flying”.

The program’s first field trip was to the “Go Free Escape Room” in Cedar Rapids where the students had to solve mysteries of the missing Ancient Egyptian Amulet. The group continued with the Egyptian theme throughout the rest of the month by making mummies, a sarcophagus, pyramids, hieroglyphics, a death mask and painted Egyptian Gods.

Clubs included STEM with Kathy Hay, Weight Lifting with Blaine Snitker, Yoga with Michelle Pladsen, First Aid with Chris Dahlstrom and Water Safety with Waukon Family Aquatic Center lifeguards Bailey, Andrew and Brennan, as pictured at right below.

The program’s next field trip was to the museum of history and natural science, Putnam Museum in Davenport. Students enjoyed the hands-on science center, the largest Giant-Screen film, and the authentic Egyptian treasures including two mummies, as pictured above. The third trip was discovering marine life wonders at “Sea Life,” an aquarium with more than 10,000 sea creatures with four themed tanks at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN.

To top things off, the students most recently visited “Lost Island Waterpark” in Waterloo, where they enjoyed a “splashtastic” good time with rides on the crowd favorite huge-sized raft, the “Calypso Cascade”, the “Takatipo” mat racer water slide, or the “Wailua Kupua” hydro magnetic water coaster, just to name a few. A short storm might have stopped the group from enjoying the rides for a few minutes, but everyone was ready to get back in when they were given the green light to enjoy the waterpark once again after the storm passed.

The next 10th Hour Middle School programming starts August 5 and runs through August 16. Students will be able to enjoy the play “Beauty and the Beast” at the Rising Star Theatre in Dubuque on that first Friday along with putting on a “play” of their own.

“We are very grateful to everyone who helped in any way to make our Middle School program a success!” shared 10th Hour Middle School Site Coordinator Virginia Kurth, who submitted the photos and information.
