He was baptized April 13, 1941 at Forest Mills United Brethren Church in rural Postville, attended Smithfield country school and graduated from Luana Consolidated Public Schools in 1959. From 1960-1964, Jerry served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman, 2nd class, spending some of that time serving in the Vietnam War.

May 6, 1972, he married Cheryl Lynn Walsh at Pilgrim United Methodist Church in Monona. Jerry had a very entrepreneurial spirit and social nature which led him to manage and even possess his own businesses over the years. Jerry also worked for the JR Watkins Company, which allowed him to travel both locally and internationally. His love for being behind the wheel led him to drive bus for Allamakee Community Schools.

On occasion, he drove the VA van for veterans’ trips to Iowa City for healthcare. In later years, he enjoyed spending his days working with his close friend, John White, on John’s Postville farm.

Jerry’s faith was extremely important to him. As a member of First Baptist Church in Waukon, Jerry served as a Deacon, janitor and Sunday school superintendent. He also belonged to the American Legion. Jerry loved to go fishing and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandkids, and his dog, Amber Rose.

Jerry will be remembered for his selfless and forgiving nature, generous heart and sense of humor. He had a silent, strong and courageous nature that was admired by all who knew him.
