Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring its 27th annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk Saturday, August 17, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event again welcomes a shorter walking route with an optional 5K to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate.

The event will begin and end at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 7 a.m. New this year, costumes are encouraged to be worn at this event by adults and youth with the top costume in both categories earning a prize.

This is a free wellness event for all ages. Anyone in the area communities is welcome to attend and enjoy a walk or run around the scenic city of Waukon. The first distance offered on the route is a 1.5-mile loop around the hospital campus and golf course.  Participants may choose to return to the hospital at that point, or go the entire distance of the 5K, 3.1 miles, that will continue around the city streets of Waukon before returning to the hospital campus. Free diabetes/blood sugar tests will be offered by the hospital’s Diabetes Education Department as well as free massages offered by the hospital’s massage therapists.

There is no pre-registration. All those interested in participating in the event are asked to arrive between 7-7:45 a.m. to register. Because this is a free event, there will not be any awards given for the 5K run; however, a large race clock will be on display so all those attending can keep track of their own race time.

All participants will receive a goodie bag for participating. Light refreshments will be served following the Costume Fun Run/Walk.

Those who have any questions concerning the event may call Erin Berns, Public Relations Director, at Veterans Memorial Hospital at 563-568-3411.
