Waukon football team’s slow start picks up speed on the way to picking up third straight win, 38-6 at home over New Hampton

Although the first quarter didn’t necessarily show it, the Waukon football team continued its early-season undefeated streak in relatively easy fashion in a 38-6 home win over fellow Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) squad New Hampton in non-district play Friday, September 13. The Indians didn’t put their first points on the board until their third possession with a minute remaining in the opening quarter, but then couldn’t be kept out of the end zone until their final possession in the fourth quarter.

“Really, it was sort of a matter of getting the kids all in phase,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. “We had some kids who were wrapped too tight, and some who were a little flat. Once the team evened out, our play improved.”

The Indians will remain at home this Friday, September 20 for their final non-district match-up of this season, hosting Class 1A Cascade. The Cougars are off to a 1-2 start this season, coming off their first win of the season this past Friday, 27-16, at home over Maquoketa Valley in a battle of winless teams.

“I would expect this to be another physical game,” Coach Beermann said. “Cascade has some pretty good-sized linemen, and they play a defensive scheme that will let you move between the 20s, but is harder to score on inside the red zone. Benton Community passed for over 400 yards against Cascade, but ended up attempting three field goals when they stalled out after long drives.”
