Nine Allamakee County 4-H youth recently showcased their talents by competing in various communications and clothing events during the Expressions Day Program held at the Allamakee County Extension Office Monday, June 29. Some of those presenters are pictured in the surrounding submitted photos.

Some of those 4-H’ers participated in Educational Presentations where they were judged on stage presence, vocal projection, organization, visual aids, educational value of topic, and how well they kept their audience interested as they present their information. Local 4-H’ers who participated included Natalie Byrnes, Tegan Dahlstrom, Breelyn Dahlstrom and Hailey Stein.

Participating in the category of Working Exhibits was Natalie Byrnes and Mia Kurth. Working Exhibit participants are judged on their ability to describe, demonstrate or teach a product or skill directly to a small audience. Their working exhibit on “Making Masks” was selected to participate in a virtual celebration of 4-H Exhibits, Communication Events and Awardrobe Clothing Selection. That 4-H Show Iowa event will provide state level recognition to partially replace the loss of these opportunities due to the postponement of the 2020 Iowa State Fair.

The Clothing Selection category provided participants the opportunity to develop skills when buying clothes, based on fit, care, construction and cost. Lastly, the $15 Challenge is a category where youth are challenged to purchase their whole outfit from a second hand store. Youth who participated in clothing events included Ali Melcher, Natalie Byrnes, Breelyn Dahlstrom, Tegan Dahlstrom, Megan Huinker and Brinnly Rea.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Style Show portion of Expressions Day was canceled. However, 4-H’er Natalie Byrnes prepared a virtual Style Show to showcase 4-H’ers’ hard work and talents that were otherwise showcased during the day of judging. This video can be viewed on the Allamakee County 4-H Facebook Page.
