Allamakee County continues to see double-digit increase in COVID-19 cases; City of Waukon staff and another ACSD student among positive cases

Allamakee County experienced another double-digit total of confirmed cases of COVID-19 this past week, although at a slower rate than the previous three weeks had seen. The past week, from Tuesday, September 22 through Monday, September 28, has seen 17 new local cases reported by the State of Iowa.

Those cases began with three new cases reported that Tuesday, September 22, with just one new case Wednesday, three more cases Thursday and two cases reported Friday, September 25. The weekend saw eight new cases reported by the State of Iowa for Saturday and Sunday combined, with no additional cases reported into Monday, September 28 to leave the Allamakee County total at 264 cases as of Monday.

The State of Iowa did note on its daily updates website,  https://coronavirus.iowa.gov/, that a data update was taking place over the weekend that included newly required surveillance testing results from long-term care facilities. The website noted that the data update would result in an overall increase in the number of individual test results and the number of antigen tests currently reported on the site.

One of the cases reported for Allamakee County this past week came from an employee of the City of Waukon Water Department. That positive case resulted in the City of Waukon closing Waukon City Hall to the general public as of Thursday, September 24 until further notice due to that positive employee having been in City Hall just prior to the employee experiencing symptoms and having a positive test result come back.

ANOTHER ACSD STUDENT CASE
Although perhaps not reported within the State of Iowa’s past week’s positive case numbers for Allamakee County, the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) did report its second positive COVID-19 case in a student since the school year began. That report was released late Monday morning, September 28 and includes the following released statement from Allamakee Community School District Superintendent Jay Mathis:

“ACSD had one student from East Elementary test positive for COVID-19 after a family member had tested positive last week. As a result, this student and four others that were determined to have been in close contact have been ordered to quarantine. No staff members had close contact with this student.”
