Kee volleyball team falls in three sets at home against West Central

The Kee volleyball team continued in search of its first win at home this season, suffering a fate similar to its home opener just a week earlier by falling to West Central at home in three sets in an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) match Tuesday, September 29. The Hawks got progressively stronger as the match went on, but not quite strong enough to fend off the match sweep. The Kee netters were dealt a 10-25 loss in set one before edging closer in a 17-25 loss in set two and then having the final set snatched away in comeback fashion by the visiting Blue Devils for a match-ending 21-25 Kee defeat.

The Lady Hawks were doubled up at the net by the visiting Blue Devils with just 18 kills in comparison to 36 for West Central, with the Hawks giving away 16 points on missed attacks and the Blue Devils surrendering 11 misfires. The Hawks had three solo blocks in comparison to just one for West Central. The two teams were similar in their effectiveness at the service line, Kee being edged in ace serves, 4-3, but also giving away twice as many point in six misfires on 50 attempts while the visiting Blue Devils had just three missed serves on 75 attempts.

Senior Jada Mitchell led the Hawk offense with seven kills, with fellow seniors Alexis Johnson and Macy Manning each adding four winners at the net. Junior Maggie Weymiller assisted on 15 of Kee’s 18 kills in the match. Johnson, Manning and Mitchell each denied a solo block in the match, with junior Laurel Scott digging up nine saves and Johnson and Manning recording eight and seven digs, respectively. Johnson, Weymiller and senior Emily Darling each served up an ace, with Weymiller converting all 10 of her serves.

Holding a 2-5 season record, the volleyball Hawks were next scheduled for their busiest week of the season with a home UIC match against South Winneshiek Tuesday, October 6 before traveling to North Fayette Valley Thursday, October 8 and then playing in the Riceville Tournament Saturday, October 10. The Kee netters will then wrap up their regular season schedule with a final pair of dual matches, Tuesday, October 13 at Turkey Valley followed by a final home dual match Thursday, October 15 with MFL/MarMac.
