20 for 20 ... Waukon girls basketball senior Margaret Wacker muscles in a basket in the Indians’ 72-43 home win over Crestwood in the opening round of Class 3A Regional Tournament play Saturday, February 13. Wacker, who wears #20 on her uniform, powered in nine such buckets down low, converting two of those into hoop-and-harm three-point plays to score 20 points in the ballgame. The Waukon girls basketball team both wrapped up its regular season and began its postseason in victorious fashion this past week, starting up another win streak to end the regular season during the week and carrying it over into the start of postseason play over the weekend. The Lady Indians opened the week with a 64-35 win at Oelwein Monday, February 8 to wrap up their best Northeast Iowa Conference season in right around a decade before ending their regular season schedule with a 65-45 win at home over Jesup Tuesday, February 9 and then beginning postseason tournament play with a 72-43 triumph at home over Crestwood Saturday, February 13 in the opening round of Class 3A Regional play.

The Indians now hold a 17-4 overall record that includes a mark of 9-2 in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play that places them in second place in the final NEIC standings. That runner-up placing marks the best finish in those final team standings since the 2011-2012 season when the Lady Indians compiled a 7-5 mark to also finish second behind Waverly-Shell Rock, which has now won its third consecutive NEIC team title and its ninth in the last 11 seasons. This season’s 10-2 NEIC record for the bucket Tribe also marks Waukon’s best NEIC win-loss record since the Lady Indians won the NEIC season championship in their 2009-2010 campaign with an undefeated record of 12-0, with this season’s two NEIC losses both coming to the champion Go-Hawks by nine and five points.

With their opening-round Class 3A Regional Tournament win, the Waukon basketball girls are next scheduled to host North Fayette Valley in the regional semifinals Wednesday, February 17, beginning at 7 p.m. The semifinals winner will then advance to the Region 5 finals played Saturday, February 20 at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined for the right to play in the Class 3A State Tournament, playing either New Hampton or Osage in that championship game.
