Local participants can register online for this year’s nine events, including Mutton Bustin’ for youth

The 2018 Allamakee County Fair coming up this week will feature a brand new rodeo performance in the grandstand Saturday evening, July 21, beginning at 6 p.m. with a youth Mutton Bustin’ event. Rogue Rodeo is a full-scale rodeo show that features a variety of nine different event favorites.

Based in the south central Iowa community of Albia in Monroe County, Rogue Rodeo is the heart-and-soul effort of Jerry Beaumont and Stephanie Allgood. Both have been involved with rodeo a majority of their lives, and the rodeo they first brought to their hometown in 2016 was voted Best New Rodeo that year by the Iowa Rodeo Cowboys Association (IRCA).

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, July 16 to address a full agenda of items including a presentation about the Robey Memorial Library, discussion of street light options with the 2019 Department of Transportation (DOT) Street Project and discussion of an air conditioning system for the Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance Garage.

The Public Hearing proposing the annexation of territory to Waukon including Lot 2 in Lot 12 in Lot 1 in the Southwest Quarter of the Northeast Quarter of Section 30 was opened and closed without written or verbal comment.

This year’s Waukon Corn Days meal date and location have been set for Friday, August 3 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. The Waukon Chamber of Commerce will be serving a meal of sweet corn and pork loin sandwiches from 4-8 p.m. that evening.
Due to time conflicts and the event location change, there will be no Corn Days Parade this year.

The Corner of Hope recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the John Deere Foundation. The funding will be used to help promote the Corner of Hope growing projects, as well as to help people in developing countries learn how to grow their own food. The Walk-On Waukon organization delivered 608 phone books for Yellow Pages to raise money for the group’s sidewalk projects. Walk-On Waukon continues to work toward grant writing and fundraising to achieve its goal of adding walking trails and safe sidewalks in Waukon. The Walk-On Waukon Committee appreciates the efforts of the local youth who helped deliver the phone books. It is the mission of the Walk-On Waukon Committee that youth such as those pictured above delivering the phone books will be able to benefit from the efforts of the group by having walking trails and sidewalks to safely walk on in the future. In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 7, the Waukon Police Department was called to a disturbance in the 100 block of First Avenue SW. As a result of an investigation, 21-year-old Anthony K. Williams of Postville was arrested and charged with willful injury (class D felony), assault displaying a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct.

Also arrested were 37-year-old Kinte L. Smith of Waukon and 65-year-old Paul A. Norton of Waukon, who were both charged with disorderly conduct, willful injury (Class D felony) and first degree burglary (Class B felony). Smith was also charged with harassment for threats made to an officer.

The Waukon Police Department was assisted by the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office and Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service. A criminal charge is merely an accusation and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, July 9 to address agenda items, including the Bible Reading Marathon to take place on the Allamakee County Courthouse lawn, the contract and bond for concrete pavement patching and an update regarding the Comprehensive Plan for the Allamakee County Solid Waste Department. Chairperson Larry Schellhammer called the meeting to order with approval of the current agenda and meeting minutes of July 2.

Several 4-H youth will now advance to Iowa State Fair

A total of 20 Allamakee County 4-H youth recently showcased their talents by competing in various communications and clothing events during the Expressions Day Program and Style Show held at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon Sunday, June 24.

Several received top awards and will have the opportunity to represent Allamakee County at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, August 9-19.

4-H’ers winning top honors in Educational Presentations and who will be representing Allamakee County at the Iowa State Fair include Katherine Hagen, Logan Brown, Diana Davison and Gabriel Mattson. 4-H’ers are judged on stage presence, vocal projection, organization, visual aids, educational value of topic and how well they kept their audience interested as they present their information.

Seeking homes to receive safety interventions

For many aging adults, the risk of falling and not knowing how long they can stay in their homes are common concerns. More than one-third of seniors over age 65 fall each year and falls account for 25 percent of all hospital admissions and 40 percent of all rehab/skilled care admissions, according to statistical reports.

Many falls could be avoided with something as simple as better lighting, removal of trip hazards or the addition of a grab bar. The Good Samaritan Society wants to help change those statistics and help seniors in the local community live in their homes longer, and the Society’s Founders Day Service Project can be a means to do just that.

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, July 2 to address a full agenda of items, including the crosswalk on Spring Avenue, City Clerk and Water and Sewer Superintendent positions and the Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance Garage air conditioning system. Mayor Pat Stone called the meeting to order with approval of the current agenda and June 18 regular session meeting minutes.

The Public Hearing for the 209 West Street Rezoning from “B-2” to “R-3” was opened. City Clerk Allen Lyon indicated that no written or verbal comments have been received and the hearing was closed.

During Public Comment, Coordinator Ardie Kuhse with Waukon Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) discussed Senator Charles Grassley’s upcoming visit to Waukon Tuesday, July 3. That visit was scheduled to include a tour of WW Homestead Dairy and time for questions from the public.
