New pain control options at VMH ... Tom Regan of Waukon, pictured above, was in the first group to have the Bone Marrow Concentrate injections by Dr. Davide Schwartz at Veterans Memorial Hospital. “I had made up my mind I was not going to have my knee replaced even though I was in pain when I walked and my knee often gave out when I tried to stand. My wife told me about a new option at the hospital. I was in the first group to have the stem cell procedure and I have had great luck so far. I took a couple of Tylenol the first night, but really had very little discomfort. I just had the second procedure, the PRP procedure, on my knee a couple weeks ago as a follow-up procedure and again had very little pain. These have made a significant difference in my life. I know I have improved a lot when one of my sons that I had not seen for a while noticed how good I was doing. It feels great to be able to do more walking again now that I’m not in pain.” Submitted photo.

Wednesday evening, December 5, Dr. Dave Schwartz will be hosting an informative pain control presentation detailing the two new pain control options he offers at Veterans Memorial Hospital.  This presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of Veterans Memorial Hospital.

These two new options for pain control that are now offered locally at Veterans Memorial Hospital help people with chronic joint pain or soft tissue/musculoskeletal pain. These new procedures provide patients with another option for pain control instead of only traditional means, such as surgery or pain pills.

Blood donors urged to give gift of life this holiday season

LifeServe Blood Center is urging eligible blood donors to roll up a sleeve and give the ultimate gift this holiday season: the gift of life. Blood cannot be manufactured in a lab and there is no substitute for it. In order to ensure blood will be available for local hospital patients in their critical time of need depends on generous donors to make that lifesaving gift.

The standard blood donation process only takes an hour start to finish, with the actual blood collection procedure only lasting about ten minutes. One donation can save the lives of up to three local hospital patients. Be a holiday hero, schedule an appointment at an upcoming blood drive in the local community.

The Waukon Community Blood Drive is scheduled for Monday, December 10 from 12-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 614 Rossville Road. Schedule a blood donation appointment online at lifeservebloodcenter.org or call 800-287-4903.

Home Health and In-Home Rehabilitation: A great partnership through Veterans Memorial Hospital

November is National Home Care Month. The purpose of home care is to keep people in their homes, near their families and in their communities for as long as possible. Home health care can provide a range of services including wound care, therapy, rehabilitative services following surgery and home infusion of drugs.

Home medical care is far less expensive than assisted living or long-term care and is covered by most insurance plans. Private insurance providers, such as Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and government policies like Medicare and Medicaid cover home health care from certified agencies. Most insurance plans require a prior authorization/prior approval before care is given as well as a treatment plan signed off by a doctor.

The Rehabilitation Therapists from Veterans Memorial Hospital will also provide “in-home” therapy to people in need of this service.  Therapy in the home is covered under Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance, such as Humana.

November is National Diabetes Month: Continuous glucose monitoring option

November is National Diabetes Month. The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Management Program offers Continuous Glucose Monitoring as an option to help medical providers fine-tune their patients’ diabetes treatment plan, giving patients optimal control of their diabetes and their life.
Continuous glucose monitoring is used to determine what a patient’s blood glucose levels are continuously, 24 hours a day, even while they sleep. When the data is downloaded at the end of the study, there are a total of 288 blood sugar readings available over a 24-hour time span. The information is able to be transferred into graphs which can show the healthcare providers how a patient’s blood sugar trends throughout each day.
