Photos may be included for an additional charge of $15 (additonal photos are also $15). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. Orpha Weymiller

Orpha Gulbranson Weymiller, age 87, of Spring Grove, MN passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, MN. Funeral services were held Monday, July 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, MN, with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor Zane Anderson officiated.
Orpha was born February 10, 1927 to Albert and Lennie (Tollefsrud) Bergrud in Spring Grove, MN. She married Iver Gulbranson June 16, 1945. The couple owned and operated Gulbranson Lumber Company in Spring Grove, MN. Iver preceeded Orpha in death October 6, 1973.
After Iver’s death, Orpha continued to operate their business, later selling it and then working for Roverud Construction until her retirement. She later enjoyed being a hostess at the Ballard House in Spring Grove, MN.

Martin Jennings

Martin Eldon Jennings, 76, of Springville, was called to stand before the Lord Sunday, June 29, 2014 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. His death came 55 days following the passing of his wife, Darlene.
A prayer service will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. The family will greet friends following the prayer service until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held for both Darlene and Martin back home in Ossian at a later date.
Martin was born November 17, 1937 in Decorah, the son of Enos and Nellie (Thorton) Jennings. After graduation from Ossian High School in 1955, he served for the United States Navy. May 28, 1960, Martin married Darlene Snitker at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church in Waukon.

Don Molitor

Don J. Molitor, 82, of Waukon died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah after a long battle with dementia. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 2 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with Rev. John Caldwell officiating. Burial will be at Russell Cemetery, rural Decorah. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 1 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Donald Joseph Molitor was born February 25, 1932 in Waterville, the son of Theodore F. and Clara C. (Brennan) Molitor. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Church in Waterville. Don attended country schools through the eighth grade.

Shirley Straate

Shirley D. Straate, 83, of Waukon died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 1 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser  officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Shirley Darlene (Huffman) Straate was born December 28, 1930 in Rossville. She was the youngest of six children born to Lee and Gladys (Leas) Huffman. She attended the Jefferson #6 school at Rossville and graduated from Waterville High School in 1948. Following her schooling she worked as a secretary.
November 21, 1952 she married Harry Edward Straate at the Rossville Presbyterian Church. Shirley and Harry farmed together for many years. She was a stay at home mom but always busy with caring for the children, helping with things on the farm, and raising a big garden which she loved to share produce from.

Everett Miene

Everett H. Miene, 75, of Waukon died Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 28 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Everett Herbert Miene was born November 7, 1938 on his parents’ farm in rural Postville, the son of Herbert and Emma (Thies) Miene. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville and confirmed at Zion United Christ of Christ in Waukon. Everett attended rural schools in the Waukon area.
July 26, 1959, he married Janann Kay Schlake at Zion United Church of Christ. He farmed with his father in Union Prairie Township, west of Waukon, until 1983; Everett and Janann then moved into Waukon. He then worked in the detail department at R.W. Pladsen in Waukon until 2002.

Charles Kistler

Charles Francis Kistler, 91, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away June 13, 2014. A  Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 26 with Rosary starting at 9:30 a.m. at St. Daniels the Prophet Catholic Church, Scottsdale, AZ. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Indian School Mortuary.
Charles was born February 18, 1923 to Francis and Theresa (Kolb) Kistler in LaCrosse, WI. He was united in marriage with Dorothy Sadler October 30, 1942. Charlie and Dorothy had four sons.
Charles spent several years working as a precision machinist in LaCrosse, WI. In the early 1950s he moved to Waukon, where he worked as a plumber and later owned and operated an earthmoving construction business. For many years he split his time between Scottsdale, AZ and Waukon. In the early 1980s he moved permanently to Scottsdale.

Ardis Cole

Ardis E. Cole, 96, of Waukon died Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 24 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Ardis Evelyn Cole was born June 30, 1917 at her parents’ home in the Village Creek area of rural Lansing. She was the daughter of Flavius Myron and Julia Ellen (Miles) Wilder. Ardis attended the Village Creek area schools and then attended high school in Hampton, where she stayed with a cousin.

Alice Conway

Alice Conway, 94, of Wexford died Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Gundersen Health Systems, La Crosse, WI. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 23 at Wexford-Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Moser as celebrant. Burial followed in the Wexford-Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
Alice was born March 9, 1920 in Harpers Ferry to Joseph and Ellen (Cota) Kernan. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Waukon High School with the Class of 1937.

Gary R. Johnson, 66, of Waukon died Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Gary Roger Johnson was born September 29, 1947 in Waukon, the son of Roger Charles and Norma June (Berg) Johnson. He was baptized at Forest Mills Methodist Church and confirmed at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, both in rural Postville. Gary graduated from Waukon High School. While in high school, he hauled milk and worked for Ludlow Creamery.
May 23, 1970, Gary married Mary Virginia Collins at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon. Gary was a lifelong farmer and raised dairy and beef cattle. He was a previous member of the Holstein Association and collected International red tractors.

Elizabeth Schwartzhoff-Berns

Elizabeth June Schwartzhoff-Berns, 94, of Prairie du Chien, WI died Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien, WI. Graveside Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 at the Calvary Cemetery, Prairie du Chien, WI.
Elizabeth was born March 18, 1920 to Gephardt and Reva (Gilson) Meskimen in Waukon. She graduated from Waukon High School in 1938 and Beauty School in 1940.
Betty was united in marriage with Aloysius “Scoop” Schwartzhoff in January 1941 at St Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. He passed away August 16, 1980. She later married Roland Berns in March of 1987 and he passed away in May of 2003.
Betty was an owner/operator of Betty’s Powder Puff Beauty Shop in Chicago, IL. She retired to McGregor in 1971. She enjoyed playing cards and watching the Chicago Cubs.
