Photos may be included for an additional charge of $15 (additonal photos are also $15). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. Keith Smith

Keith M. Smith, 91, of Postville passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014 at his home in Postville. Funeral Services were held Friday, October 17 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville with Rev. Gary Catterson as the officiant. Interment was at the Postville Cemetery.
Keith Morgan, the son of Lester and Dora (Harris) Smith, was born October 21, 1922 in Postville. He graduated from Postville High School in 1940. Keith was united in marriage with Rose Marie Brewer June 15, 1944 at the St. Bridget Rectory in Postville. Keith farmed his family’s farm, north of Postville, his entire life. He retired from farming in 2008.

Virginia "Ginny" Luster

Virginia “Ginny” Ann Luster, 73, of Harpers Ferry, formerly of St. Olaf, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014 at her home. Funeral services were held at Norway Lutheran Church in St. Olaf Friday, October 17, with Reverend Marshall Hahn as the officiant. Interment was held at Norway Lutheran Cemetery.
Virginia was born December 22, 1940 to Gunnar and Selma (Knudtson) Landsgaard in rural Gunder. She attended St. Olaf Independent Elementary School and graduated from Elkader High School in 1958. Virginia graduated from Luther College, majoring in Music and minoring in English, where she was a four-year member of the Luther College Nordic Cathedral Choir.
She was baptized March 23, 1942 by Reverend S. J. Strandjord at Norway Lutheran Church and confirmed there June 27, 1954, also by Reverend Strandjord. Virginia was united in marriage to James “Pete” Luster August 10, 1974 in St Olaf at Norway Lutheran Church.

Kathryn Phillipp

Kathryn M. Phillipp, 66, of Waukon, formerly of Waterloo, was gently called home to be with the Lord Sunday morning, September 28, 2014 from her home in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 18 at 3 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Matthew Castle officiating. Friends may call from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, October 18 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Kathryn Marie Phillipp was born December 22, 1947 in La Crosse, WI, the daughter of William Ellis and Nettie Pearl (Kellison) Sheriff. She was baptized at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville and attended Waukon schools. Kathy worked at IBP Beef Packing Company in Waterloo. She lived in Clarksville, Milwaukee, WI, Grafton, WI, Prairie du Chien, WI and Waterloo before moving to Waukon in 2008.

John Larkin

John B. Larkin, 86, of Dorchester died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 11 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Jim Dubert and Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Burial was at St. Mary's Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon.
John Bertram Larkin was born July 15, 1928 in Jefferson Township in rural Waukon, the son of John C. and Miranda Helen (Link) Larkin. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Pius Cherry Mound in rural Harpers Ferry. John attended elementary school at Jefferson #7 and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Waukon in 1946.

Willard Miene

Willard Jerome William Miene, 76, of Luana died Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 18 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, with Rev. Steve Brackett as the Officiant. Inurnment will follow at Postville Cemetery, Postville. Visitation will be Friday, October 17 from 3-8 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, with one-hour visitation before services at the church Saturday.
Willard was born March 5, 1938 to Fred W. and Frances (Gilson) Miene on the home farm in rural Luana. Willard was baptized April 28, 1928 and confirmed March 18, 1951 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville by Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig. He graduated from Luana Consolidated High School in 1957.

Bernice J. Knudtson, 93, of Waukon died Friday, October 3, 2014 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 25 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Inurnment will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call one hour before services Saturday, October 25 at the church. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary Ann Ranzenberger

Mary Ann  Ranzenberger, age 72, of Mabel, MN and formerly of Dorchester died Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Green Lea Senior Living in Mabel, MN. Funeral Service was held Monday, October 6 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Eitzen, MN, with Rev. Todd Krueger officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mary Ann was born February 28, 1942 in Hesper to Otto and Myrtle (Erickson) Rasmussen. She attended school in Hesper and graduated from Mabel High School. She lived in Minneapolis, MN for a short time and worked for Lutheran Brotherhood. She then married Marcellus Ranzenberger and they lived and farmed in the Dorchester area until moving to Mabel.  She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Eitzen, MN and enjoyed growing flowers.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Marcellus, of Spring Grove, MN; a brother, Richard Rasmussen of Mabel, MN; and nieces and nephews.

Bernard "Barney" Mauss

Bernard James “Barney” Mauss, 99, of New Albin died Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, October 4 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Albin, with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant. Burial followed at the St Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Albin.
Bernard was born September 21, 1915 in rural New Albin to George and Florence (Hammell) Mauss. Some of his fondest childhood memories were of working with his aunt, Minnie Donovan Sattler, on a farm near Freeburg where he attended a nearby country school for a time.
Bernard attended school in New Albin and in his early years worked for Fish Severson in Lansing delivering oil.  He also worked for Mendenhall Lumber in New Albin for many years before working on his own as a skilled carpenter. Barney built many new homes in Allamakee and Houston Counties. In addition, he and his mother, Florence, operated Mauss Hatchery in New Albin for 19 years.

Gary Zimmerman

Gary Alan Zimmerman, age 55, died suddenly Friday, September 26, 2014 while hiking Conundrum Trail in Aspen, CO with his wife, Susan. Private family services will be held Thursday, October 2 on Gary’s Pond with Reverend Susan Springer, St. John’s Episcopal Church. Services will be followed by a gathering of friends and family to celebrate his life at 11 a.m.
Gary was born in Waukon April 19, 1959 to Sally Jane (Sharp) and Walter Zimmerman. At the time of his death he lived in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Niwot, CO with his wife, Susan, of 24 years, his son, William, and his daughter, Ingrid.

Mary Turner

Mary E. Turner, 84, of Waukon died Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, October 1 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.
Mary Emma Turner was born September 24, 1930 on her parents’ farm in rural Monona. She was the daughter of Christian and Emma (Kiester) Levenhagen. She was baptized at home and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. Mary graduated from Monona High School; after school, she waitressed at the Corner Café in Monona.
