Kerndt Brothers Bank to host branchwide food drive

Kerndt Brothers Bank has announced a branchwide food drive for each of the local food pantries located in Lansing, Waukon, Decorah, Clermont, West Union and Cedar Rapids. Non-perishable, non-expired food items such as pasta, soup/broth, canned vegetables and fruits, dinner kits, crackers, syrup, pancake mix, peanut butter, jam/jelly, among others, will be accepted for donation. Also appreciated are personal care products such as toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Items will be accepted until November 20 and may be dropped off at any of the six Kerndt Brothers Bank locations in the communities listed above. Food collected at each branch will be delivered to the local food pantry in their respective communities.

Trick-or-Treat on Main Street in Lansing Halloween evening

Main Street Lansing will be sponsoring Trick-or-Treat on Main Street Thursday, October 31 from 4:30-6 p.m. Downtown businesses will stay open late to distribute treats to kids. There will also be Halloweenies and Haunted Chocolate available at the Kerndt Brothers Community Center from 5-6:30 p.m.

Lansing City Council hears update from ambulance service and its need for more EMTs

The Lansing City Council meeting was held Monday, October 21. The discussion at the meeting centered around the consent agenda, an ambulance update, and a street report.

The consent agenda consisted of council meeting minutes from October 7, Milty’s liquor license renewal, Utility Reconciliation Report for September, transfer of funds from savings to general checking to cover splash pad expenses, and Safe House Saloon liquor license renewal. A motion was made and seconded to approve the consent agenda.

The ambulance service in Lansing is looking for EMTs and drivers to help cover the day shift. A class is coming up in January in Waukon to become certified to be an EMT and anyone who may be interested in taking the class is encouraged to contact anyone on the Lansing Ambulance Service or call Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 563-568-3411.

Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center to host Driftless Birding Fest November 9

The Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center located in Lansing will host the Driftless Birding Fest Saturday, November 9. The Fest will include speakers, exhibits and self-guided field trips to area hotspots.

Speakers will include William Reiter-Marolf, who is a biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Upper Mississippi River Refuge. His presentation will begin at 10 a.m. and will include information on the Upper Mississippi Fish and Wildlife Refuge and the bird research that is done throughout the entire refuge.

At 1 p.m., Pamela Eyden, editor of the book “Birds of the Upper Mississippi and the Driftless Area,” will read selected stories from the book at the Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center. Along with other editors of the Big River Magazine, she helped put together the 39 stories that appeared in the magazine over a 22-year period.

Ribbon cutting and First Dollar Visit for Coffee on the River ...

Main Street Lansing recently held a ribbon cutting and First Dollar Visit for Coffee on the River, located at 60 South Front Street in Lansing. Co-owned by sisters Diana Wilson-Thompson and Wendi Eiden, Coffee on the River is the first dedicated coffee shop in Lansing. However, they have much more than coffee, also offering sandwiches, salads, desserts and wine. Lansing City Council meets, discusses this weekend’s Driftless Half Marathon

The Lansing City Council met in regular session Monday, October 7. The discussion centered around the consent agenda, citizen actions and a report from the City’s Parks and Recreation Board.

The consent agenda consisted of council meeting minutes from September 30, payment of claims, Marina Board meeting minutes from September 30, Parks and Recreation Board minutes from August 20 and September 17, Library Board minutes from August 20, liquor licenses for Coffee on the River and Red Barn Resort and Campground, Treasurer’s report for August, and utility receipts report for August. A motion was made and seconded to approve the consent agenda.

A variance request for caged chickens at 659 Wall Street was approved by the council.

Quilt show to benefit New Albin Public Library scheduled for this weekend

October 11-13, over 200 quilted items will adorn the New Albin Community Center, located at 137 Railroad Avenue SW in New Albin. Hours for the show will be Friday, October 11 from 4-7 p.m.; Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday, October 13 from 12-4 p.m.

Kee Post Prom to host Bingo this Sunday at Kee High School

The Kee High School Post Prom Committee will host Bingo Sunday, October 13 in the Kee High School cafeteria in Lansing. Games will start at 4 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m.

Participants can bring a non-perishable food item or $1 donation and play an extra Bingo card free. All donations will be given to LIFT (Lansing Iowa Food Trust). All players will be eligible for a door prize drawing at intermission. Proceeds will be used to fund 2020 Post Prom prizes and entertainment.

ITC donates to Friends of Pool 9 and Centennial Refuge Book ...

Friends of Pool 9, Upper Miss Refuge, Inc. and the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge are literally “making history.” Ric Zarwell, long-time Iowa conservationist and founding board member emeritus of the Friends of Pool 9, is coordinating development of a book, “Century of the Refuge,” which will record key changes, insights and happenings over the past 100 years on the 261 mile-long Upper Mississippi Refuge.

ITC conducting fall aerial patrols of transmission lines

Public advised of possible low-flying helicopters near area electrical lines

ITC will be conducting semi-annual aerial patrols of high-voltage transmission structures and lines throughout its service territory through October 14, weather permitting. Helicopter patrols provide an overall status of the overhead transmission system owned and operated by ITC’s Iowa-based operating entity, ITC Midwest LLC.
