Waukon football junior Brady Sullivan breaks through the Dyersville Beckman front line to drop this ballcarrier for a loss in the Indians’ 53-35 home victory over the Trailblazers to open Class 2A District 4 play Friday, September 8. Sullivan left the game early with an injury but wrapped up a pair of solo tackles for a loss in his total of three each of solo and assisted stops before his departure. Big plays were a big factor in a big first step taken by the Waukon football team in opening their Class 2A District 4 schedule with a 53-35 victory at home over Dyersville Beckman Friday, September 8. The Indians struck on three scoring plays covering 216 yards in their first three possessions to bolt to a 22-0 headstart they would never really look back from in keeping their undefeated season and number-one ranking intact as District play got underway.

“We have a great deal of respect for Beckman as a program, so to jump on them like that out of the gate was pretty shocking,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. “We know this group of players has that kind of ability, we just don’t always get to see it. Friday night it was on display in the first quarter, and most of the second.”

The Kee football team’s first victory of the season couldn’t have come at a better time than the start of District 3 play, as the Hawks played host to Central City Friday, September 8 and came away with a 24-6 triumph. For the third consecutive game Kee’s grid guys put together a strong first half effort, holding a halftime lead for the second consecutive week, but this time the Hawks continued that effort for the game’s remaining half as well, answering their only defensive letdown directly and coming up with some big defensive plays to further cement an overall strong defensive effort in the contest.

The Hawks are next scheduled to travel to Tripoli this Friday, September 15 to continue District 3 play against the 3-0 Tigers. Tripoli comes off a 68-8 trouncing at home over Central Elkader this past Friday, and also has wins of 34-30 over Riceville and 42-28 over Janesville to its early-season credit.

Waukon football team holds off New Hampton for 28-20 non-district win

Unbeaten Tribe gridders ranked #1 in daily newspaper polls after first loss by previous #1 B-H/RV

A game that saw the Waukon football team more than double up its New Hampton host in total yardage didn’t turn out to yield that same result on the scoreboard in the final non-district match-up of this young 2017 football season Friday, September 1. A strong defensive stand by the Indians that limited the Chickasaws to just 166 yards of total offense was somewhat overshadowed by a handful of “unique” occurrences that helped keep the Chickasaws in the latest chapter of what has come to be a recent series of classic grid battles.

Kee girls cross country senior Nicki Wood maintains a lead in front of a Central Elkader runner on the way to a top-five individual finish to help the Hawks to the team championship, also in front of Class 1A top-rated Central Elkader, at the MFL/MarMac Invitational held Thursday, August 31 at the Tri-City Country Club. Wood finished fifth overall in the 38-runner field in a time of 21:39.47. Photo courtesy of the Kee High School Yearbook. The Kee cross country team posted its most successful overall results in many years when it ran at the MFL/MarMac Invitational Thursday, August 31. The Hawk girls made a strong early-season statement by, literally, running past Class 1A’s most recently top-ranked team, two-time defending Class 1A State Champion Central Elkader, to claim team championship honors at the MFL/MarMac meet, while the Kee boys also showed marked improvement as this young season gets underway with a runner-up finish at the meet run at Tri-City Golf Course in rural Luana.

The Waukon volleyball team competed to both start and end this past week, winning just one match out of a total of seven played during the week. The Indians started the week with a marathon dual match at home against MFL/MarMac, eventually surrendering the five-set battle by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22 and 13-15. After having the remainder of the school week free from competition, the Indians played six matches at the Mabel-Canton Classic hosted by Mabel-Canton High School in Minnesota Saturday, September 2, and won just one of those matches, 25-18 and 25-17 over Lanesboro, splitting two more, 26-24 and 8-25 against Grand Meadow and 25-23 and 22-25 against Spring Grove. The other three Indian matches at the event were all surrendered by sweeps, 7-25 and 17-25 against Mabel-Canton, 19-25 and 17-25 against Rushford-Peterson and 16-25 and 22-25 against Kingsland.

Waukon football team opens season with 56-0 romp over MFL/MarMac

Going airborne ... Waukon football senior Isaiah Welch leaps for a catch in the Indians 56-0 home victory over MFL/MarMac to open the 2017 season Friday, August 25. Welch hauled in three receptions for 46 yards and also caught another for a two-point conversion before also kicking an extra point. The 2017 season for the Waukon football team opened with a bang, as the gridiron Tribe made short work of Class 1A neighbor MFL/MarMac with a 56-0 triumph at home Friday, August 25. The game was a homecoming, of sorts, for former Waukon football head coach Tom Oppelt, who is now in his fifth year as head coach of the Bulldog gridiron program.

Behind an early tone set by senior standout Mitchell Snitker, the Indians bolted to a 50-0 halftime lead on the way to the easy victory. Snitker scored on the second play from scrimmage on a 48-yard touchdown run and then also on the Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage with a 30-yard “pick-6” interception for a touchdown, all within just over a minute into the game and headlining a five-touchdown performance by the speedy senior on just five offensive touches in the game.

Waukon volleyball gets season off to sweeping start vs. Postville

Back row blast ... Waukon volleyball senior Matti Pladsen unloads on a kill attempt from her back row defensive specialist position in the Indians’ three-set season-opening sweep of Postville at home Monday, August 21. Pladsen hammered out two such kills and also recorded three digs in the match. View and find out how to purchase this photo and many more by clicking on the Photo Galleries link on this website.

The Waukon volleyball team got its 2017 season underway in convincing fashion with a season-opening sweep of Postville at home Monday, August 21 by set scores of 25-9, 25-10 and 25-14. Although the Indians’ 25 kills and 26 ace serves indicate some of the type of success they had, what may have been even more impressive than what they did on their side of the net was what they did not allow the visiting Pirates to do in the match, stifling the Postville squad that had not won a single match all last season to just one kill and no ace serves in Monday’s match.

The Indians were next slated to host MFL/MarMac Monday, August 28 before playing in the Mabel-Canton, MN Tournament Saturday, September 2. The Tribe netters will then open Northeast Iowa Conference play at Decorah Tuesday, September 5 before playing in the Crestwood Tournament Saturday, September 9.

Missed opportunities on defense result in Kee football team’s season opener coming up short, 48-36, against top 10-rated Turkey Valley

Trippin’ up a Trojan ... Kee football junior Aidan Winters (#54) helps wrap up this Turkey Valley ballcarrier in the Hawks’ 48-36 home loss to the Trojans to open the 2017 season Friday, August 25. Winters tallied one quarterback sack in his total of five solo tackles and four assisted defensive halts in the contest. Photo courtesy of the Kee High School Yearbook. The Kee football season kicked off at home against a familiar and formidable foe in fellow Upper Iowa Conference squad Turkey Valley, who came off an undefeated 2016 regular season and begins this season with a top-10 ranking in the Eight Player class. Much like the Hawks’ season last fall, where a play or two here or there would have made a big difference, Kee football coach Chad Winters noted a small handful of plays could have resulted in a different result than the 48-36 Kee loss in the Friday, August 25 season-opener.

“We had our chances, but couldn’t get the big stops when we needed them,” Coach Winters said. “We had an opportunity to stop them on third- and fourth-and-long multiple times and didn’t do it. If we can get those stops, it changes the dynamics of the game.”

Kee volleyball team returns four letterwinners for 2017

The Kee volleyball team will return four letterwinners for its 2017 campaign from a team that compiled a 12-21 season record but graduated eight seniors. With a majority of this season’s faces on the court being new to the Hawk volleyball varsity squad, additional new faces will be guiding that charge as well.

Lynn Winters will take the helm of a Kee volleyball program that will see its third head coach at the varsity level in the past three seasons due to staff members transferring to other schools. Her daughter, Alivia Winters, a 2014 graduate of Kee High School and former Hawk volleyball player herself, has assumed the assistant volleyball coaching duties. Although formally new to the head coaching position, Lynn Winters has already been involved with many of the Kee players as a coach for local club volleyball programs and organizer of local Iowa Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) volleyball tournaments.

Waukon boys cross country team seeks to fill large graduation loss with veteran trio of letterwinners and influx of newcomers

Back row: Nate Helgerson, Matt Ronan, Robbie Drew, Zach Davison, Andrew Mellick, Michael Smith. Not pictured: Andrew Miller, Brennan Bednarski, Denzel Decker, Daniel Gruman, Reese Reisinger.

The Waukon boys cross country team may be small in returning veteran leadership, but the squad’s overall numbers hold some promise. Seventeen young men have reported for early-season workouts for the Tribe distance dandies, but just three of them return with varsity experience from a team that made a third consecutive trip to the State Cross Country Meet last season.

“First and foremost, I am pleasantly surprised by the number of guys we have on the team this year with several new additions,” said Waukon boys cross country coach Tara Stein. “It will be nice to have enough guys out to be able to score as a team for both varsity and JV races. I have been very pleased with how hard all of the guys have been working during camp and the first couple weeks of practice and I am anxious to see how we come together and compete as a team.”
