Waukon girls basketball team christens newly-dedicated Dave Schoeberlein Gymnasium with 57-19 win over Oelwein

It was its only scheduled game for this past week, and it ended up being a lopsided victory over an overmatched opponent, but no other game this season will likely hold a deeper meaning than the Waukon girls basketball team’s Friday, December 7 home game vs. Oelwein, as the Lady Indians christened the newly dedicated Dave Schoeberlein Gymnasium with a 57-19 rout of the visiting Huskies.

Waukon boys basketball team splits another pair, opens week with 63-47 win at Sumner-Fredericksburg but begins NEIC play with 63-54 loss at Oelwein

The Waukon boys basketball team played to another split of two ballgames this past week to even its overall season record at 2-2. The Indians opened the week with a 63-47 road win at Sumner-Fredericksburg Monday, December 3 before closing out the week by starting their Northeast Iowa Conference schedule with a loss on the road, 63-54, at Oelwein Friday, December 7.

The Indians were next scheduled to play a pair of Northeast Iowa Conference games at home, hosting Crestwood Tuesday, December 11 before doing likewise with Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, December 14 in a girl/boy doubleheader. The hardcourt Tribe will then finish off the 2018 portion of its schedule with a road game at Decorah Friday, December 21 prior to the holiday break.

Kee girls basketball team plays to another undefeated week with a 35-18 home win over Clayton Ridge and 49-44 win over Houston, MN

The Kee girls basketball team put together another pair of wins this past week, winning both at home and away and both in and outside Upper Iowa Conference play. The Lady Hawks played to a 35-18 victory at home over Clayton Ridge Tuesday, December 4 before battling to a much closer final result, a 49-44 triumph over Houston, MN at the annual Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle hosted by Luther College in Decorah Saturday, December 8.

The Kee girls will remain at home for all this week, hosting Turkey Valley Tuesday, December 11 and then Central Elkader Friday, December 14. The Lady Hawks will then finish off the 2018 portion of their schedule with a very busy final week on the road before the holiday break, playing at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, December 18, at De Soto, WI Thursday, December 20 and at MFL/MarMac Friday, December 21.

Kee boys basketball team comes close to its first wins of the season with single-digit losses to Clayton Ridge and Lanesboro

The Kee boys basketball team remained in search of its first win of the season but came very close to achieving that feat in each of its two games this past week. The Hawks opened their home season coming up just shy of a win, 53-51, in an Upper Iowa Conference match-up with Clayton Ridge Tuesday, December 4 before closing out the week with a 60-54 loss to Lanesboro, MN at the Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle hosted by Luther College in Decorah Saturday, December 8.

The Hawks were next scheduled to host both Turkey Valley, Tuesday, December 11, and Central Elkader, Friday, December 14. The Kee boys will then wrap up the 2018 portion of their schedule with a pair of road games, playing at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, December 18 and then at MFL/MarMac Friday, December 21 prior to the holiday break.

Top entries in Waukon Wellness Center’s Fifth Annual “Turkey Trot” 5K Run/Walk ...

The Waukon Wellness Center hosted its fifth annual “Turkey Trot” 5K Run and Walk Thanksgiving morning, November 22. Approximately 110 participants (pictured below at the starting line the day of the event) took part in the event, with first-place finishers in five of the 12 age categories receiving a frozen turkey (indicated by an asterisk [*] in the list below) and the top three placewinners in each age category taking home medals to commemorate their effort. The event was held to advocate wellness in the local community and also as a fundraiser for the community tennis court project, raising $1,200 for that cause. The top entries in each age division at the annual event are pictured above and listed as follows:

Kee boys basketball team drops season-opening pair at UIC foes South Winn and Postville

The Kee boys basketball team got its 2018 season off to a winless start, falling to a pair of Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) opponents on the road. The Hawks first fell at South Winneshiek, 62-23, Tuesday, November 27 before falling, 40-29, at Postville Friday, November 30.

The Hawks were next scheduled to host Clayton Ridge Tuesday, December 4 before playing Lanesboro, MN at Luther College Saturday, December 8. The Kee boys will then host both Turkey Valley, Tuesday, December 11, and Central Elkader, Friday, December 14.

Kee girls basketball team opens UIC season with pair of road wins

The Kee girls basketball team got its Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) season underway with a sweeping week on the hardcourt, winning both of its match-ups this past week, both of them on the road. The Lady Hawks kicked off their UIC season with a 46-33 victory at South Winneshiek Tuesday, November 27 before dominating Postville on the road by a 63-13 final result Friday, November 30.

The Kee girls will return home Tuesday, December 4 to host Clayton Ridge before playing Houston, MN at Decorah High School Saturday, December 8. The Lady Hawks will then remain at home for all of next week, hosting Turkey Valley Tuesday, December 11 and then Central Elkader Friday, December 14.

Waukon bowling teams split home battle with Tripoli; boys win, girls fall shy


Each in the 260s ... The Waukon girls bowling pair of senior Emma Roe (photo above) and sophomore Taylor Peterson (photo below) each rolled individual series’ in the 260-pin range in the Indians’ 1960-2199 home loss to Tripoli Friday, November 30. Peterson bowled games of 110 and 159 for a 269 series, with Roe close behind with her 261 series consisting of games of 139 and 122. Standard photos by Joe Moses. The Waukon bowling teams hosted their second consecutive opponent Friday, November 30 when Tripoli came to town for an early-season match-up. The Waukon squad split its pair of match-ups with the visiting Panthers, the Indian bowling boys picking up their first victory of the season, 2681-2513, while the Waukon girls surrendered a 1960-2199 final result to their guests.

The Lady Indians fell victim to a pair of 300 individual series’ bowled by Tripoli, including an event-high 365 rolled by Panther freshman Lauren Funk. The Indians were led by their lone 300-pin tally of 308 comprised of equal games of 154 from senior Megan O’Neill. Sophomore Taylor Peterson was next in line for Waukon with games of 110 and a team-high 159 for a 269 series, with senior Emma Roe not far behind with a 261 comprised of game tallies of 139 and 122.

Waukon wrestling team wins one of three duals in season-opening quandrangular, finishes in 11th place at Wapsie Valley Tournament


Undefeated in three matches ... Waukon 145-pound senior Miles Hansmeier has his Nashua-Plainfield opponent under control in a home quadrangular event Tuesday, November 27. Hansmeier scored a 10-5 victory in this match and also scored a win by fall in 27 seconds in the Oelwein dual and received a forfeit in the Indian victory over Postville. The Waukon wrestling team opened its 2018-2019 season with a busy week of wrestling three dual meets and one tournament in its initial week of competition. The mat Tribe began that busy week with a home quadrangular in which it defeated Postville, 48-36, but lost to Nashua-Plainfield, 63-9, and Oelwein, 78-12. The Indian matmen then wrestled at the Wapsie Valley Tournament Saturday, December 1, finishing 11th in the 12-team field.

The wrestling Tribe will next compete in a road double dual at New Hampton Thursday, December 6 against the host Chickasaws and Oelwein before taking part in the South Winneshiek Tournament Saturday, December 8. The Indians will then host Crestwood Thursday, December 13 before wrestling in the Starmont Tournament Saturday, December 15.

Waukon High School gymnasium to be dedicated in honor of long-time basketball coach Dave Schoeberlein at December 7 girls home games

A Friday, December 7 event will see the Waukon High School gymnasium dedicated in honor and in the name of a man who likely spent more time and touched more lives in that same gym and during his coaching and teaching career than anyone else. During that Friday, December 7 home game series against Oelwein for the Waukon girls basketball team, a ceremony will be held between the junior varsity and varsity contests to unveil what will be the newly dedicated Dave Schoeberlein Gymnasium at Waukon High School.
