The Kee boys track team was competing for extension of its season at its Class 1A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, May 14. That extension happened for just one of this season’s Hawks, but it happened in two events, as sophomore Danny Brennan ended up as a double State Meet qualifier for the Hawks in the two events that have become his specialties this season, the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run.
Brennan won automatic qualification for this season’s Class 1A field in the 400 meter dash of the Iowa High School State Track Meet, topping Thursday’s State Qualifying Meet field in the event with a clocking of 53.54 seconds. Although Brennan was just over a second off of a second event championship and automatic State Meet berth, the 2:05.99 runner-up finish he clocked in the 800 meter run was good enough to gain Brennan one of the 12 top non-championship berths in the event out of all Class 1A State Qualifying Meets from across the state.

Letter to the Editor: Memorial Day Memories

To the Editor:
At this time of year, I always think of the teachers that gave their time to teach us 11-13 year-old girls flag drills to be performed on Memorial Day and the 4th of July. We did the flag drills on the stage as the school band played. After the program we were taken to the cemetery and we would put our small flags on the servicemen’s graves.
This isn’t the main thing I have to tell about. My husband Ted’s brother served in the navy during World War II on an aircraft carrier. In his last letter to us, he was feeling so sad that he hadn’t received mail from home. A short time later his ship was hit by a kamikaze. He was among the 92 young men killed that day.
