LaVonne Schulte

LaVonne M. Schulte, 78, of Waukon died Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Friends may greet the family from 9 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

LaVonne Mary Schulte was born June 12, 1944 in Spring Grove, MN, the daughter of Vincent and Rose Katherine (Hancock) Schulte. After graduating from Waukon High School, LaVonne moved to Cedar Rapids to work for Rockwell Collins. She eventually moved back to Allamakee County, where she worked for several years in food service, including as a cook at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, and also worked for Mosaic. As a great cook, LaVonne enjoyed making treats to give out, too.

Jean Schulte

Jean Ann Fahey Schulte, 88, of Cedar Rapids died Thursday, August 11, 2022 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 17 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Nick March. Burial will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 17 at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dorchester.

A Vigil Service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 16 at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Those not attending the Vigil Service may visit with the family Tuesday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home and again Wednesday after 12:30 p.m. at the church, prior to services.

Mary McGowan

Mary Albert McGowan, 91, of Prairie Village, KS passed away peacefully the morning of July 26, 2022. Catholic Mass was held Friday, August 5 in the Chapel at St. Ann Catholic Church, Prairie Village, KS.

Mary grew up in Lansing, where she graduated from Immaculate Conception High School. She attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN and upon graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science, embarked on what would become a career dedicated to the service of others.

She is survived by her three children: son William (Joby) of Prairie Village, KS, and daughters Amy of Kansas City, MO and Catherine (Ray) of Nashville, TN; her grandsons, Andrew (Wei Yan) of Lafayette, CA and Thomas (Caylin) of Roeland Park, KS; and her brother, John Albert (Veronica) of Ridgeley, WV.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” McGowan; her parents, William and Anita Albert; and her brothers, William and Thomas Albert.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic-Postville will host an open house for all area communities to attend Thursday, August 11 from 5-7 p.m. Tours of the remodeled facility as well as a mini-wellness fair will all be offered at this event, which coincides with the Postville Farmer’s Market located across the street from the clinic. Pictured above and below are a few photos of the remodeled facility at 124 West Greene Street, Postville. The clinic is open Monday through Friday. Appointments can be made by calling 563-864-7221.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic-Postville will host an open house for all area communities to attend Thursday, August 11 from 5-7 p.m.  The Postville Clinic is located at 124 West Greene Street in the same location of the former Postville Medical Clinic in downtown Postville.

Full-time clinic family nurse practitioner Michelle Crary will be on-site explaining her new family health care medical practice and schedule availability, as will Dr. Thomas McMullan, who remains on part-time with the clinic. Nurse Midwife Katy Maker, NP will also be on-site to explain her maternity and women’s health care practice she will be starting in just a few weeks at both the Postville and Waukon VMH medical clinics. Laura Baxter, Clinic Director; Casey Fisk, Clinic Medical Assistant; Shaina Kruger, Clinic RN; and Teresa Berg, Clinic Receptionist will all be on-site offering tours of the remodeled facility.

Behavioral Tele-health Services ... The new, convenient behavioral tele-health services are available at the Veterans Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic in Waukon. The contracted tele-health company provides the clinic with its own medical provider who specializes in psychiatry and can help with medication management. Patients meet privately with the behavioral tele-health provider in this room, pictured above. The clinic will also have a full-time nurse practitioner this fall who specializes in behavioral health. New behavioral tele-health services are available at the Veterans Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic in Waukon. The contracted tele-health company provides the clinic with its own medical provider who specializes in psychiatry and can help with medication management.

Patients do need to be referred to this new service by their Veterans Memorial Hospital medical clinic provider or the hospital’s emergency room (ER). Anyone who has not yet established care at the clinic will need to do so in order to take advantage of this new service.  All providers in the medical clinic are currently accepting new patients.

Once that care is established, the referral will be made and patients will be able to visit with this tele-health provider in the tele-health room. Clinic staff will assist with the tele-health connection with the health specialist, and then patients will meet privately with them over the system, pictured here, in that room.

Healthcare Faces of the Future for 6th-8th grades ... Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and Veterans Memorial Hospital have teamed up to provide a day for 6th-8th graders to explore the many health care careers that are available to them. The event will be held Wednesday, September 14, which is a teacher in-service day with no school. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and Veterans Memorial Hospital have teamed up to provide a day for 6th-8th graders to explore the many health care careers that are available to them. The event will be held Wednesday, September 14, which is a teacher in-service day with no school. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

All attending will be visiting numerous health care departments around the hospital and hearing from staff in those roles. They will share their education, job duties and what they do during a typical day in their work life, all in an effort to introduce more youth to the vast career opportunities in health care.

Corinne Cook, RN, will be the class instructor. This class is held free of charge and a lunch will be served. All those attending should enter the hospital through the ICN entrance located at the southeast side of the hospital along the golf course.

Jared and Brianna Melcher of Lancaster, WI announce the birth of their son, Braxton James Melcher, born July 20, 2022 at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, WI. He weighed 7 lbs. 12 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at his birth.

Grandparents are Jeff and Sara Melcher of Waukon, Brian and Chris Koth of Elkport, and Brian and Lori Gardner of Lancaster, WI. Great-grandparents are Roger and Karen Melcher of Harpers Ferry, Ralph and Diane Mohn of Harpers Ferry, Wayne and Arlene Junk of Cassville, WI, and the late Monroe and the late Wilma Gardner of Glen Haven, WI.
