Why children and teens should get vaccinated against COVID-19

submitted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

What You Need to Know
• COVID-19 can make children and teens of any age very sick and can sometimes require treatment in a hospital. Some children and teens have even died from COVID-19.
• The benefit of COVID-19 vaccines, like other vaccines, is that those vaccinated get protection without risking the potentially serious consequences of getting sick with COVID-19.
• Help protect children from severe disease, hospitalization, or death by getting them vaccinated against COVID-19.

Lansing RAGBRAI 2022 ... Submitted graphic.

RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is coming to northeast Iowa in just a few weeks. Approximately 15,000 bicyclists from around the world will be pedaling through Waukon and ending up in Lansing on July 30. It will be a very exciting summer!

As a clergy, I have been volunteering on the Lansing RAGBRAI team. I’ve written some of the press releases you’ve been reading and worked designing the logo. I think it is important the ministers and members of our congregations serve the community and this is a fun and convenient way to do so. The entire event will bring a lot of revenue and future tourism to our communities.

Letter to the Editor: More thoughts on our community

To the Editor:

So many things to write about: the passing of Baxter Black from the U.S. Farm Report, the beauty of the corn crop rows as we travelled to the waffle breakfast at the Northeast Iowa Community College Campus in Calmar last week, noticing the weedless corn rows. Seeing a stalk of corn in a bean field is a weed, a weed is a plant out of place. Corn is beautiful but not in a bean field.

On the same note, an old truck or trailer gracing the city plaza for weeks at a time, is a weed in what is supposed to be a beautiful plaza, no doubt to be replaced in the distant future, by a dumpster next to a thriving business in the old J.C. Penney store, which may by that time need another new roof.

Waukon baseball team has season brought to a close with 5-0 loss at fourth-rated Dyersville Beckman in game shortened by stormy weather

Hauling in an out ... Waukon baseball senior left fielder Hunter O’Neill looks in a fly ball for an out in the Indians’ 5-0 loss in the semifinal round of the Class 2A District Tournament at fourth-rated Dyersville Beckman Tuesday, July 5. O’Neill reached base one time on a fielder’s choice in the contest, and he hauled in three fly balls for outs in his final game in a Waukon baseball uniform. The Waukon baseball team had its 2022 season brought to a close earlier than it wanted to - both in the overall season aspect as well as in the final game it played. The diamond Tribe traveled to Class 2A fourth-rated Dyersville Beckman Tuesday, July 5 and played the highly-regarded Blazers to just a 5-0 result through the Indians’ fifth-inning at-bats before lightning and stormy weather forced officials to call the game due to weather concerns, with rules stating that a game played through the fifth-inning at-bats of the team not leading on the scoreboard can be declared an official game, with that ruling bringing the Indians’ 2022 campaign to a close with the 5-0 loss.

Waukon softball team has season ended in regional first round at Wahlert

The Waukon softball team had its Class 3A Regional Tournament opened and closed at Dubuque Wahlert Wednesday, July 6, the Indians being dealt a 13-3 loss in six innings by the host Golden Eagles. Battling back from a 4-0 initial deficit to pull within a couple runs near the game’s midway point, the Indians had the game get away from them in the fourth through sixth frames with eight unanswered Wahlert runs to the mercy-rule ending.

The Golden Eagles out-hit the softball Tribe by a 19-2 count, but the Indians were able to use their two singles to help take advantage of the 6-5 edge they were dealt in free passes in the contest. Three of Wahlert’s five free passes found their way to the scoreboard as well.

Kee softball team has 2-0 lead give way in late innings to have 2022 campaign ended with 6-2 loss at 15th-rated Central City

End of softball season also brings outstanding high school athletic careers to a close ... The Kee softball senior pair of Haley Meyer (photo above) and Reagan Mudderman (photo below) teamed up to score the Hawks’ only two runs in their 6-2 loss at 15th-rated Central City in the quarterfinal round of Class 1A Regional Tournament play Wednesday, July 6. The lone two seniors on this season’s squad managed back-to-back singles in the third inning before both were driven in by a double from junior catcher Alison Wagner, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead that would stand until the bottom of the fifth inning. The loss not only brings a close to the Kee softball season, but also brings to an end the outstanding high school athletic careers for the senior pair, who made significant contributions to all four sports they participated in during their high school careers and left record-setting marks in their respective specialty sports they are each going to continue with in college, Meyer in running and Mudderman in basketball. The Kee softball team had its 2022 season brought to a close at the home of 15th-rated Central City Wednesday, July 6 in the quarterfinal round of Class 1A regional tournament play, but not without giving the highly-regarded Wildcats a strong battle that opened up a bit in the later innings. Playing Central City to an even hitting effort of six safeties each, the Hawks took a 2-0 advantage they would hold until the fifth inning, when those Wildcats were able to string together most of their hits, along with two of their 3-1 advantage in walks, to pull away to a 6-2 Kee defeat.
