Angela Kula

Angela “Angie” A. Klocke Kula, 79, of Waukon, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness. She will be fondly remembered for her love of life by her sisters, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 23 at 11 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating, and burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions in Angela’s name can be made to FluffyButts Rescue Resort at www.fluffybutts.com, to the Bethlehem Presbyterian Cemetery Fund, or to the Old East Paint Creek Cemetery Fund. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

Lee Colsch

Lee F. Colsch, 67, of Waukon died Monday, July 11, 2022 at Grand River Medical Group in Dubuque. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. John Moser and Msgr. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. John The Baptist - West Ridge Cemetery in rural Waukon.

Lee Francis Colsch was born April 24, 1955 in Waukon to Harold Francis and Shirley Ann (Mauss) Colsch. He grew up on West Ridge along with four brothers and eight sisters. Lee attended Union Prairie #2 country school until it closed in 1967, then attended St. Patrick School for a year before transferring to Waukon Junior High. He participated in 4-H, FFA, wrestling, student council, and the National Honor Society during junior high and high school.

Shirley Hesse

Shirley G. Hesse, 89, of Waukon died Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon with Pastor Sue Klimstra officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church Wednesday. Martin – Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.

Shirley Gladys Hesse was born January 24, 1933 in Waukon, the daughter of Daniel and Gladys (Bublitz) Adney. She attended school in Waukon. December 20, 1950, she married Ronald Hesse at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon. They farmed together in Allamakee and Winneshiek Counties, where they milked cows and raised pigs, chickens and crops. In 2012, Shirley and Ron moved into Waukon.

Howard ‘Jerry’ Willyard

Howard ‘Jerry’ Willyard hails from the sturdy stock of North Dakota. Born on March 2, 1930 in Carrington, ND, Jerry died on July 7, 2022 at the age of 92, at his residence in the senior living community of Arlington Place, Oelwein.

Jerry was the salt of the earth; an unpretentious, strong, direct, steady and contented man. He raised two exceptional children and enjoyed an enviable, lifelong, loving marriage.  He understood there are no greater rewards in life.

Rev. Donald Bakewell

Reverend Donald V. Bakewell, of Dubuque, was called to be with the Lord on July 6, 2022, surrounded by family. Visitation for friends and relatives took place, Monday, July 11, 2022, at St. Joseph Church in Key West, with a prayer service led by Fr. Josh Link. Friends and relatives could also call on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at St. Patrick Church in Waukon. The mass of Christian burial followed with Archbishop Michael Jackels presiding and Fr. John Moser as homilist. Burial was held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque assisted the family.

Oliver R. Roderick, 96, of Waukon, died Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 12, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends greeted the family at Martin - Grau Funeral Home in Waukon.

Linda Lambert

Surrounded by her family and friends, Linda Lou Lambert passed away peacefully at Welllington Place in Decorah on July 5, 2022, at the age of 80. Funeral services were held Monday, July 11, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah with Pastors Karla Wildberger and Ken Kimball officiating. Visitation was at Good Shepherd with burial at Old West Paint Creek Cemetery in rural Waukon. Friends may greeted the family Sunday at Martin - Grau Funeral Home in Waukon. The family requested that in lieu of flowers, please donate to Wellington Place in Decorah.

Loren Looney

Loren R. Looney, 61, of Postville, died Sunday, July 3, 2022, at his daughter’s home in rural Waukon, following a three year courageous battle with cancer. A prayer service was held Saturday, July 9, at St. Paul Lutheran Church’s fellowship hall with Lisa Schroeder officiating. Burial was at St. Patrick Cemetery, Monona. Friends greeted the family prior to the prayer service in the church fellowship hall. Martin – Grau Funeral Home in Waukon handled the arrangements. The family requested  that in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Northeast Iowa Shooting Club or Postville Ambulance Service.

New report examines farmer perspectives on 4R Plus nutrient loss reduction

A recent report from the Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll at Iowa State University indicates that a major nutrient management effort called the 4R Plus initiative is having a positive impact.

4R Plus, a science-based framework designed to guide improved nutrient management among farmers, is promoted by a coalition of more than 50 public and private agricultural stakeholders and non-governmental conservation organizations.
