Waukon girls basketball team falls hard at home to Decorah

Waukon girls basketball senior Lyvia Bulman gets this shot off over a Decorah defender in the Indians’ 55-22 home loss to the Vikings Tuesday, December 9. Bulman finished the game with three points, four rebounds and one steal.

In its only competition of the past week, the Waukon girls basketball team had difficulty putting the ball in the basket in a Northeast Iowa Conference match-up at home against Decorah Tuesday, December 9. An overall team shooting percentage of just under 23% kept the Indians from posting more than single-digit totals in any of the game’s four quarters on the way to a 55-22 Indian loss.

“We just couldn’t put the ball in the hoop,” Waukon girls basketball coach Andy Sires said. “We played great defense in the first half, but overall it was a very difficult night for the Indians.”

Only the five Waukon starters scored in the contest, but only one of those five scored more than one field goal and/or free throw. Senior post player Jackie Welch was the recipient of some nice interior passing from her teammates in scoring 14 of the Indians’ 22 points in the contest, but the remaining five players who took shots for the Tribe converted at just an 11% efficiency in making only three of 26 field goal attempts.
