Changes made in Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons renewal procedure

The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind current Iowa Permit to Carry Weapon holders that there have been changes to the renewal procedure for their Nonprofessional Permit to Carry.
Qualification and application for renewal of an Iowa Nonprofessional Permit to Carry Weapons now involves the following:
• To renew a Nonprofessional Permit to Carry Weapons, a person must complete any of the acceptable forms of training, or, at the discretion of the applicant, may instead choose to qualify on a range under the supervision of a certified instructor. The instructor will determine what constitutes qualification.
• The completion of another training course or qualification on a range must occur within the 12 months prior to the expiration of the current permit. Since an application for a renewal must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the expiration of the current permit, this effectively leaves an 11-month window in which a person must complete training or qualify on a range.
The DD-214 form cannot be used to renew a permit. Anyone who has obtained their Nonprofessional Permit to Carry Weapons originally with their DD-214 form will also need to complete any of the acceptable forms of training or qualify on a range under the supervision of a certified instructor. A DD-214 form cannot be used to renew a permit as the training did not occur within the previous 12 months prior to the expiration of the permit.
