The 2015 season was brought to a close for the Waukon girls cross country team Thursday, October 22 at the Indians’ Class 2A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Monticello. The Lady Indians came up short of the top-three team finish and top-15 individual finish requirements for State Meet qualification, scoring 266 team points to finish 12th in the 13-team scoring field.
The meet featured four or the top three rated teams in Class 2A at season’s end, all three of them battling to continue their season at this year’s State Meet Saturday, October 31. In a fairly tight team race, top-rated Monticello joined third-rated Cascade and fourth-rated South Winneshiek in earning that State Meet qualification, with just eight points separating the three teams.
The Indians were led one final time this season by sophomore Gabby Marti, who placed 30th in the 87-runner field in a time of 21:57, with freshman Megan O’Neill next in line with her 55th-place finish in 23:12. Junior Grace Blocker placed 58th with a clocking of 23:40, and senior Alex Marti and sophomore Laurel Keenan posted a consecutive finish of 61st and 62nd, respectively, in times of 24:00 and 24:16 to wrap up the Indian team scoring. Junior Erika Johnson and freshman Sydney Ross scored another consecutive finish to complete the Indian effort, Johnson coming in 71st in 25:00 and Ross placing 72nd in a time of 25:09.
