Waukon football team ends regular season with 46-12 triumph at Oelwein

Knowing full well what needed to be done on its own behalf to secure the best possible State Play-Off seeding it could, the Waukon football team more than took care of its own business in ending the 2015 regular season with a 46-12 romp at single-win Oelwein Friday, October 23. With their own part of securing the greatest margin of victory allowed (13 points) for any play-off seeding tie-breaker well in hand, the Indians needed further help with a loss by North Fayette Valley and only a single-digit win by Dyersville Beckman to ascend the play-off seeding ladder as best it could.
Although North Fayette Valley did not oblige, defeating New Hampton by a 19-0 final result to wrap up Class 2A District 3’s top play-off seeding, Beckman delivered for the Indians, winning by just a 20-14 result in overtime. That combination of further help landed the Indians a number-two play-off seeding and a hosting of their Class 2A State Play-Off first-round contest, which will be this Wednesday, October 28 against Union of La Porte City - a number-three seed from neighboring District 6, beginning at 7 p.m.
The victory wraps up the Indians’ regular season with an 8-1 overall season record, including a mark of 5-1 that ended up in a three-way tie with North Fayette Valley and Dyersville Beckman for the Class 2A District 3 lead, with North Fayette Valley earning the district’s top seeding by virtue of a scoring margin tie-breaker that also left the Indians as the number-two seed and Beckman as the number-three seed.
That number-two seed earned the Indians a home game for their first-round Class 2A State Play-Off journey, with further details of that postseason possibility being described in a shaded box elsewhere on these same Sports pages. The Indians will play Union of LaPorte City this Wednesday, October 28, beginning at 7 p.m.
