For the third time in the last four seasons, not only have the Waukon football Indians qualified for the Class 2A State Play-Offs, but have now advanced at least as far as the quarterfinal round of those play-offs with at least two postseason victories in each of those three fall campaigns. This year’s gridiron Tribe joined the 2012 and 2013 football Indians by opening its Class 2A State Play-Offs with a 32-13 home victory over Union Wednesday, October 28 followed by a 42-21 road triumph at Aplington-Parkersburg Monday, November 2.
Those victories improve the Indians’ season record to 10-1 and advance them to the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A Play-Offs, where they are one of just eight teams remaining in the Class 2A field. Their reward for those two first-round victories is a rematch with the only team that has defeated them this season, the defending Class 2A State Champion North Fayette Valley TigerHawks. That rematch will take place this Friday, November 6 on the TigerHawks’ home field in West Union, beginning at 7 p.m.
North Fayette Valley handed the Indians a 48-8 road defeat in late September in Class 2A District 3 play, limiting the Indians’ season-long air show to just 171 yards while rumbling away for 430 yards on the ground. The TigerHawks come off a 52-28 drubbing of Hampton-Dumont Monday, November 2 after posting a 49-14 first-round victory over Cascade.
Friday’s winner will then advance on to the Class 2A semifinal round to be played in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Saturday, November 14. Other Class 2A quarterfinal match-ups for this Friday include Central Lyon/GLR at Spirit Lake, Mount Vernon at Anamosa, and South Tama at Albia.
