Meeting in regular session, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors opened its Monday, November 9 meeting with all members in attendance. Following the approval of the meeting agenda and the approval of the November 2 and November 5 minutes, the floor was opened to public comment.
Jerry Halverson, Robert Kolsrud and Jim Magner, representing the local Disabled American Veterans chapter, presented Supervisor Dennis Koenig with a certificate of appreciation for his service to the United States as a veteran of the U.S. Army ahead of the November 11 Veteran’s Day holiday.
Karen Pratte, representing the Allamakee County Democratic Central Committee, and Kristi Hager, representing the Allamakee County Republican Central Committee, spoke to the Supervisors about an upcoming bipartisan "Youth Caucus" event for students in grades 9-12 planned for Thursday, November 19 at the Waukon High School (see accompanying story on this same page). The event will include students, and parents in an observatory role, from all school districts in the county. Pratte and Hager also extended an invitation to the Supervisors for the event.
Continuing in to regular business, the Supervisors opened and closed a Public Hearing with no input from the public for an amendment to an ordinance establishing and defining “Public Use Buildings and Facilities” ahead of construction of the new Public Safety Center. The proposed amendment will make it possible for the County to apply for a building permit for the Center through the Allamakee County Board of Adjustment. Tom Blake, Allamakee County Zoning Administrator, noted no comments had been received during the weeks leading up to the Hearing after notice had been published. The Supervisors will move forward with the first reading of the ordinance at their next meeting.
In other business, the Supervisors:

  • Canvassed the November 3 election for the cities in Allamakee not including Waukon, which was canvassed November 5 due to a run-off provision.
  • Approved Manure Management Plans for Charlie Deering/Chas & Chas, Paul Link/Link 1, and Johanningmeier Dairy.
  • Accepted the resignation of Rick Larson, a 13-year veteran of the Secondary Roads Department.
  • Approved signing the final Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) Progress Voucher for Skyline Construction for five flood recovery projects around the county.
